We used SOTW 1- SOTW3 (for 1st thru 3rd grades) and have enjoyed history so far. However, I think we will spend next year (ds will be 4th grade) going a little more in depth into American History (skipping the Modern Times). I seem to remember an American History curriculum that I liked the looks of (for grammar stage ages). Maybe it was one using a combination of WTM/classical method and the Charlotte Mason method (we like using a spine and then supplementing with lots of living books). I had it bookmarked but my computer crashed and I lost all of my links.

Any know of an American History curriculum like this?

You could look at the Truthquest (http://www.truthquesthistory.com) American History for Young Students series. It lists a couple of different spines by chapter plus lots of individual books on each topic with grade level ranges.

We have used TruthQuest for years and love it! We are CMers and it fits that method very well. Adding memory work and writing assignments will make it more classical. TQ is very versatile! The best part is that it is literature-based. We have had a feast at the table of living books via TQ history.

It uses a combo of 1 spine, with a lot of good living books. You can either do 2 years of American History (Core 3 and Core 4) or you can do 1 year (Core 3+4). We're halfway through Core 4 and still loving it.

Was it a free one.

I know that www.ourlosbanos.com has an American History curriculum that's free and uses lots of living books, some activity books like History Pockets etc.

I didn't know about it so I actually went out and bought a bunch of history pockets, the DK children's encyclopedia of American History and a bunch of books I thought the kids would like in the subject area and am making up my own schedule a little at a time. Good thing I have until Sept. to get it done :p

Since you just finished sotw 3, you could do the third book of truthquest for elementary students. That would be perfect. Truthquest is more charlotte mason style.

We did this when my dd was in 3rd grade. We learned a lot and had a great time. I can't really say too much bad about it. This year we are doing Winter Promise Sea and Sky because my sister-in-law really wanted us all to do that one together. I think we have decided to go with American Story 2 next year though. www.winterpromise.com (http://www.winterpromise.com)
