My son is a lefty and his handwriting needs much improvement. I am surprised the teachers are able to read it. I encourage neat handwriting at home, but it appears it is not reinforced in school. To my knowledge they are not working on practicing print or cursive in third grade as of yet. Could anyone recommend a handwriting program we can use that worked for your student?

It depends on the print handwriting program your school is using. If they are using D'Nealian to ease the transition to cursive, I wouldn't use HWT. If they are using block letters, I would.
Our school uses D'Nealian. My sons teacher sent home extra practice handwriting books, but I didn't think they were helpful because it was mostly blank lines. I bought a D'Nealian daily handwriting book that included a great deal of tracing work and that helped some.
When you are trying to correct handwriting, rather than learn the strokes for the first time, I think tracing is the way to go, but I'm not an expert.

Handwriting without Tears has worked wonderfully for us, but we have had a couple of times where it didn't match up with the strokes the school is teaching. I just told ds to do it the HWOT way.:D

Our schools use HWOT. It is one of the things the school fundraiser pays for. We were already using it at home.

Thanks for the suggestion ladies. My son used D'Nealian when he was in private for two years. In second grade he learned how to practice cursive now that he is in public I do not believe they are working on handwriting at all print or cursive. I did learn from a friend whose child attends the previous private school my son went to that students in third grade have to write in cursive all the time. My son actually has beautiful cursive handwriting, but his print is not very good because he is curling all of his letters. I think I will try to get him to write in cursive more.
