I have been trying to evaluate the differences in order to choose between Nance's Introductory Logic and Cothran's Traditional Logic for my son (to be in 7th grade) next year.
I am hoping to make my final decision when I can see them at a conference this weekend.

My question in anticipation of that moment of decision is this:
Regardless of which program you used - did you find that the dvds added much value - or is the course easily self-taught (whether that be to the teacher or the student)?

If possible, please indicate which progam you used - and if you found the dvds to be helpful.

Thank you in advance.

I've been using Traditional Logic with a 7th grader and two 8th graders this year and it's been just great. I started out with the DVD's but we finally quit using them about halfway through the book. They were very boring and just a repetition of what was written in the book--they didn't add to the class. I've heard some people say that the DVD's were more helpful in TL 2, but I haven't tried them. We just started TL 2 and haven't run into any glitches yet--the kids are all in the groove and enjoying logic!

Ds 13 will take Nance's Intro/Intermediate Logic course online next year -- in addition to the dvd's at home. Mr. Nance will discuss the material/concepts w/ students in the virtual classroom -- taking it above and beyond the dvd content. He meets w/ 8th graders daily for Logic at Logos School and will have lots to discuss w/ the students online.

We'll tackle Cothran's program later in high school.

We used Cothran's Traditional Logic 1. I would agree with Phyllis in Canada. The DVDs for TL 1 were very dry. The book explains everything well enough. I believe we could have done very well without the DVDs.

I looked over both the Introductory Logic book and the Traditional Logic book and felt that it was easier to read and understand than the Introductory Logic book. This was why I chose TL over IL.
