Would you recommend using the , Imitations, Theme based, SWI A, or just using the TWSS for yourself and pulling materials from Sonlight? I'll be introducing IEW next year in 3rd.

DS (who will be 8) will be doing SWI-A with Core 3 next year. We will work on the SWI twice a week. It should last through the year. We also do Friday freewrites (Brave Writer) and dictation. When I did SWI-A with dd, we did it in 14 weeks. I think twice a week will be better. DS is working through Writing Trails with Men of Science this year. After DS finishes the SWI, I think I will teach him using the TWSS and maybe using some of the US History Based Writing Lessons.

Starting with the SWI helped me figure out how to teach IEW. I also purchaed the new Tips and Tricks DVD. I think I now have a much better idea how to proceed through the units...we'll see.

For ease of use and a solid introduction, I'd recommend SWI-A. It's set up for daily lessons, but you can certainly stretch it some. You'll learn a lot from it too!

After that you can go with one of the theme-based programs or watch TWSS yourself and come up with assignments. I'm teaching a co-op with the medieval book this year, and the first American book next year. Their variety and choice of assignments is frankly better than what I could come up with consistently.
