I have a 7 year old daughter finishing 2nd grade math and am considering plans for next year. We are currently using Horizons math and I would like to supplement with Aleks. Has anyone used Aleks with children as young as 8 and how did it go?

I am a high school math teacher and began using Aleks with my high school students this year. I was shocked by the difference in cost for one of my students at school and for my own child at home. The cost is about 400% more. Do all of the people using Aleks pay $20 a month/$180 a year?

I tried this with my 7yos and 8yod. Both do 3rd grade work, although ds is in 2nd grade. I use it with my 5th grader with great success, and had high hopes for the little guys. Unfortunately, it was just not a good fit. My dd is a dawdler, and I don't think she would have accomplished enough during the year to justify the expense. Also, she is not math-minded, and I ended up having to practically sit next to her and re-explain the ALEKS explanations. My ds is math-minded, and he liked it, but he was just too young, and again, I didn't think he would be able to do enough to justify the expense.

So that's our experience. And yes, it's very expensive for home use!

I consider a dollar a school day for keeping up with my son's drill needs a bargain as he prepares for testing with the ACT, SAT, etc. I wouldn't use it for a younger kiddo, though because of the cost.
