I just received a brochure in the mail for Discovery World's Homeschool day on May 7th. My boys have loved these classes and there is an aquarium and movies that you can attend with your younger children. Here are the classes that they are offering:
Ages 7-9 Experiment Design: Plants - Learn the in's and out's of designing an effective and reliable science experiment while investigating the survival needs of plants. Students will explore the scientific method and leave with both an experimental plan and the supplies necessary for at home investigation.
Rollercoaster Challenge - The laws of motion have never been as fun or educational. Students will design and construct their own rollercoaster using simple materials.
Keying into Classification - Students investigate scientific classification while learning how to design and utilize dichotomous keys in the "field". Focusing on fish identification and utilizing Discovery World's Reiman Aquariums, students will put this important skill into practice.
Ages 10-12 Put Your Finger On It- Investigate the science of forensics in this hands-on lab. Fingerprinting, hair analysis and DNA sequencing are explored as students work to solve a mock crime and learn the techniques and methods of scientific criminal investigation.
Colors of the Sea - Observe the affects water and depth have on light absorption and the colors that we see. Students will explore ocean zones, bioluminescence, and adaptations of deep sea organisms.
Maps & Topography - Students construct and practice using different types of topographic maps. They are introduced to people and fields that use these maps, and why they use them.
Ages 13-18 Tipping Point to Toxicity - Learn how high toxicity levels and bio-magnification affect humans and the environment by studying toxins that pose problems in the Great Lakes. Students take part in a simulated environmental investigation to pinpoint the source of pollution fouling an industrialized area.
Work Under Pressure; and Biomimicry: Looking to Nature
Cost: non-member cost is $12 per student which includes two classes and any of the films they would like to see.
$8.00 per adult
$4.00 per child (4-6)
