fastest gun in the west!

My five-year-old has recently begun playing a game he calls sheriffs, in which everyone wears a brass star, and we're likely to hear him or his brothers brag, "I'm the fastest gun in the west!" He's never really been exposed to westerns so I don't know where this is coming from. I'm all about jumping on his interests, though. Can you recommend any books on Wyatt Earp, or any aspect of that mythical old western town life with saloons, bandits and gunslingers, which are appropriate for little boys?

I've never read it, but, if it's anything like his other books "Cowboys" by Holling C. Holling would be great. He also has one on American Indians.

Well, these aren't really 'learning' books, just nice picture books imo... the cowboy series by Joan Walsh Anglund.

And a very funny easy reader book we found was "Jess and the Stinky Cowboys" by Janice Davis Smith.

So, those aren't really 'learning' books but maybe a few fun picture books to look for at the library.

My sons especially ds5 has been infatuated with cowboys too. We have read every book in the library I can get my hands on.

I'm not sure how you feel about movies but I found a DVD of old (I mean really old) John Wayne movies that we have been enjoying as family. Most are B&W and very appropriate for young boys. My sons have been enjoying this immensely. I think I bought it for about $5 at Walmart. It has made family movie night a great success!

I don't have an issue with movies, but my 5yo isn't interested in any movie that's not animated. I don't want to have to resort to An American Tail 2.

So which of those library books you've been devouring have been good?

Sorry, I can't remember them. There were sooo many. My son loves anything with a western theme. I just went through our library and did a search for cowboys and requested whatever came up.
