View Full Version : I'm worried about not finishing TOG in 4 years before high school....

We have just started Year 1, Unit 3 this week. Knowing our current and future schedule for next year, I am pretty positive we will not be able to complete one full volume per year. Due to co-op activities. I will likely only be able to spend 4 days a week on it and due to the other subjects needing to be covered as well, do not believe that I can squeeze the 5 days of material into 4. What I am thinking is that we will do Day one to day five of each week in the plan and complete as much as we can each year. I will look for opportunities to condense when possible (but this may be hard for me-I'm a box checker). My son is in 5th and I'm thinking that we would get at least Years 1-3 done and perhaps part of 4 before high school. I'm also thinking that is is likely we will have some, or, all of Year 4 left to do when we begin 9th grade. :(

Part of me, is thinking that's o.k. and to just use the curriculum as we like, learn deeply and enjoy. :) We can do Vol. 4 in 9th, and finish off with Vol. 3 in 12th. But part of me feels anxious about this. What say ye the crowd? Would you worry about it, too? I really want to make this work, but don't think I could give up co-op. Ds being an only, he really needs that interaction with other teachers and students. I should say that school in summer won't be an option. It's always a nice thought, but it is never a reality. Also, my husband won't support it. He believes in having the summer off.

Your thoughts are appreciated. BTW-the Redesign rocks! I love the Dialectic questions and answers! I'm pleased with the upgrade.

This is exactly what I would do. It really doesn't matter what order the years are in high school.

Let the curriculum serve you. It will work out fine!:)

Don't worry Zee. There are places you could condense, Marcia posted a schedule for condensing Year 1, Unit 4 on the TOG forums, but ultimately how ever far you get will be fine.

O.k., thank you. I'll just try to go with my gut and relax. I guess I just needed to know that I wasn't going to mess high school up, and wasn't blind to some important thing that would make me plan otherwise. Seems like the anxiety of "doing it right" is starting to kick in. I may be a mess by the time we get to 8th grade, but hopefully not.

I did see the post about condensing Year 4, I'll have to look at that again. Thanks for the reminder. I need to place an order before 2/1.

Zee,
My daughter is in 6th using TOG year 1, Ancients. We will complete one year plan of TOG per year. What matters is that she does 4 years of Rhetoric work in High School, not what time-frame she is studying.
Fear not! :)

So, this is what we'll do in high school:
9th - TOG 4 (modern)
10th - 1 (ancients)
11th - 2 (middle ages)
12th - 3 (early modern)

Well, this is what I kept thinking....what if I had other kids who were off cycle? Thanks for the encouragement. :)

I recently purchased TOG. I purchased Y1U4 and Y2. I've been reviewing the 4 units that I have and realize that there is a TON of information there. In fact, Y2 is amazingly full in just the first 2 units. I've decided that we will just do this as it comes. I highly doubt I'll be able to get all of Y2 done in a year, even if we skip the 3-4 weeks of reformation.

I think this is a good time to realize that the curriculum is written to serve you. Skip weeks that don't interest you. Or combine them with other weeks. Some weeks you may want to do Core history only. Other weeks, the lit suggestions may not interest you, so you can skip them. You may want to spend less time on the puritans in colonial America. It's all ok. :)

Thank you. I guess I feel like I need permission to do what you said. I don't know why. I suppose I worry that maybe I'm not thinking about it right and not having ds do enough, when realistically, I know we are working our booties off most of the time. I appreciate the encouragement and I am going to relax and enjoy this curriculum, letting it serve me in the way that's best for ds and I. :)

We started TOG Yr 1 this year, my oldest is in 7th grade (ack! she's off cycle), next is 5th (ah, perfect!), next 2nd (eek! another one off cycle!), next K (oh, no, yet one more...) and a 2yo (hmm, when will he start 1st grade?!). See you're not the only one. :o
It'll be okay, really, it will. And if you don't want to do all four cycles in highschool you can do a year (or semester) of Civics or Government or a certain American History period in-depth...oh, the possibilities!

BTW, I like your name!:D

O.k. that makes me breathe a little easier, too. I haven't had time to think through how the credits would be affected by not completing all 4 years, but I had a concern there, too. This is good. I don't want to be locked into it, if something comes up that causes a need to pursue a different path. I intend to map out our high school credits this summer, so I have a plan of where we need to go, but I know that it will change based on my son's career path, co-op classes offered and such. I feeling much better about all of this, and am glad I posted instead of continuing to listen to the worry voice in my head, when I knew in my heart that my plan was o.k. all along.

Thank you for the complement. I like the way your avatar matches your handle. :D Very cool!

Dear Zee, What I am *planning* to do, not by accident, but intentionally on purpose, is this, perhaps using TOG, but at any rate, the idea works for you WITH TOG.

Grade 8: Year 1
Grade 9: Year 2
Grade 10: Year 3
Grade 11: Year 4
Grade 12: Whatever we darn well want to focus on, probably going waaaay deep into the Ancients, which has some stuff in it that requires a LOT of maturity to deal with.

I had planned to do this all one year sooner, leaving the "people's choice" to both 11th and 12th, but this year got highjacked with a "Western Warfare for Boys" class that was too good to pass up at the co-op, and it has been a good decision. We are sort of seeing the history of the western world through the memorable battles, and the armor and guns make it very appealing to the 12yo boys.

That's what I did. My oldest was "on schedule," but we deliberately went off and plan on letting 12th be whatever.

Will you count high school credit for the 8th grade year? I know Marcia says you can give high school credit if they do the work in eighth. I like the idea of having 12th grade free to do whatever we're short on or to allow for some fun electives. Will you have to do government seperately?

I am not counting 8th grade work for credit. Since we are behind, unintentionally this time, this year will be World History 753 BC-1700 AD or thereabouts. I am giving separate credit for government, .5 credit.
