How important is this? Does it really help you understand & implement HTRAB?

I have this guide, and have not used it yet, but I plan to at some point in the future. I'm not sure it is going to help you *understand* the book. I think it will help you work through the book and process what you are learning. It's basically a guide.

Here's an example from the book:

This deals with the chapter, "How to Be a Demanding Reader" (HTRAB pp 45-56, 377-392)

1. List the 4 basic questions that you should ask, and answer as you read anything.
2. Read the paragraph on p. 48, "People go to sleep...and beyond you." 2X
3. What are 7 devices that Adler suggests for marking a book? Do you have any others that you use?
4. What are 3 types of note-taking and at which reading levels are they used?
5. The only way to read skillfully is to develop the habit of following the rules, not just knowing the rules. True or False

Go to appendix B, p. 377,
II. Exercises and tests at the Second Level of Reading: Inspectional Reading - read p. 377-392 and do the exercises (Tests C and D)

Hope that helps! :001_smile:

When you have a chance, I'd love to know this information, as well as how to order if she does have any available, Elaine.

Thank you!

Pandia Press used to sell this guide - not sure if they still do. The guide is helpful to get through the book. But, ugh!, the book was torture to get through. Not sure I'd recommend it.

So you need a guide to read a book about How to Read a Book? Is this guide very, very good? I ask because dd had difficulty wit HTRAB, but I thought it was because she was too young for it. Has anyone here used HTRAB successfully without the guide?

I agree. I slogged through it and took copious notes and I don't remember a thing 2 years later.

It's not for a browse, that's for sure.

If you really don't like it, The Well Educated mind is a good substitute.

I agree. I'm currently reading HTRAB and its a bit...dry. WEM was a page-turner, imho.

We slogged thru it with students in 9th grade. We used MaryAlice's VERY GOOD guide. BUT - it was hard for the kids - the guide definitely helped - but when I read this with my next kid I will wait until possibly even 11th or 12th grade - as a prep for college. I'm not sure it was helpful as a prep for high school.

When I taught this to our co-op, I used it in the FALL for one semester then took the kids thru a 2nd semester (Spring) of "how to write a research paper" and I thought the principles from Adler would be a good precursor to "researching" ... but ... well ... not really so much.

I haven't looked at this book since then, but I do remember there were definitly some VERY HELPFUL chapters, and some more that were just too tedious to be helpful. When I read it with my next kid I will ... ahem .... "filter."

and she isn't complaining yet. :001_smile:I can't imagine just having her read the book without a guide. The book is so dense I think the guide helps to focus on the main points.
