I enjoyed reading the posts about a ds9 who prefers typing rather than writing. Ladies (and Gentlemen?), my children are just learning to type at 9 and 10! We struggle with writing, but we're doing it for spelling and journaling.

I would enjoy reading others' thoughts on when and how typing should begin.

my ds9 (the one I wrote about!), dd11 and ds8. BUT, all are very familiar with the keyboard already. Typing was one of those skills I'll never regret learning early.

As soon as their interested would be a good time! My kids love being on the computer. Just choose a fun one:) You can prob try dfferent programs out at the library first.

and use Mavis Beacon. They love it. Starting young and learning to do it correctly is better than starting late, after developing bad habits (I know some kids like that, and they can type, and type fast, but they learned by playing games, and so they have a very unconventional way of typing, they can't follow a program). it's very interesting, actually.

My ds10 and dd almost 8 started typing this year. We're using Typing Instructor for Kids as well, and they are really enjoying it. I do have them write out their rough drafts by hand (and ds10 does them in cursive).

My eldest (9) started wanting to type when she was young so that she could type up her stories. We used Mavis Beacon and it was great! I think for my other kids I'll start around 8 or 9.
