I happened upon Rami Nagel online today while researching toddler tooth decay. My 1 yo ds has some brown and rough spots on his eye teeth and I can't figure out why he would have them. I've breastfed him and only given him healthy foods. Sometimes a cookie from the store but for the most part, he eats well. I also brush his teeth. Our pediatrician thought we should have our dentist take a look at his teeth. He has an appt. for next week but I'm so bothered by this that I thought I'd take a look for any info online.

I found this guy's site and I think the gist is with the proper diet, teeth can be remineralized. He believes that the cause of tooth decay is nutrient defiency not bacteria or an excess of starch/sugar sitting on the teeth. I didn't get much time to read his site (he also has a book) or watch his YouTube video but thought the idea was interesting. I am wondering if anyone else knows anything about him or has heard about his ideas.

Thanks!

my cousin has really bad teeth- the Dr.'s have said it was due to an illness that required a very long round of antibiotics- he said that sometimes the antibiotics will cause a young child's teeth to decay if they(med's) are strong, or used for a long period of time, or used multiple times.

My sister is going through this with her 21 month old. She did some research and found a few things that are supposed to help. I don't have any of her sources (I think she read some things linked from Mothering.com). She isn't home right now to ask, but off the top of my head, she mentioned vitamin D, probiotics, and a type of omega (sorry - I can't remember which one). She also mentioned someone saying that raw milk helped.

I'll ask her when she gets home and post again. But, do a preliminary search on the discussion boards at Mothering. That ought to get you started.

I read somewhere that honey helps to prevent cavities. Odd, but we eat a fair bit of it and my 10 & 11 year olds have never had a cavity.

yup, he had a large round of antibiotics when about 17 months old. Also - on his dad's side comes some pretty weak enamel to begin with. This kid, post-braces at age 16, FINALLY has white teeth - the dentist really worked on him, and for the front of his front teeth removed the outer layer and "stuck some white stuff on and smoothed it out to look like teeth" (to quote ds, who just walked by).
