How do you organize and put away curricula that your saving for younger DC who will use them later? Do you put books away by subject or grade level?

For years, I've put books away by subject. I'll have all my Math books on one shelf, history on another, etc.

I'm interested to know your methods as there may be a better way out there that I've not thought of.
Thanks in advance!:)

by that I mean I put all curricula for one school year in one box, etc. I'll label the box w/ each school year (ex- 2008/09) and the contents (so I don't forget). I have a box for next year and one for 2009/10 already. Since I know we're doing MFW RtR (or at least a similar program for that time period) in 2009/10, I have all books on that time period, all math curricula I *think* my dc will need, grammar, spelling, etc. (if I have them and they are not already being used!) and each "stack" is separated by a folder with the dc's name/grade on it. I prefer the clear bins, but they get expensive so some are in cardboard boxes. It's easy here, though, b/c most of my dc follow right behind the other by grade level, KWIM? HTH

I do it by subject. I also have file folders by grade/subject.

I sort everything by subject so I can see what I have in one product line easier. I sell some items that I know I won't use again. Because I sometimes waver on whether to save or sell, I don't always remember what I have and don't have. We also often use mixed years/grades materials so to sort by grade would require me switching back and forth too much to see what I have. The only exception to this is the reading materials. It is all together on the main shelves, except specific readers for curriculum, which are stored away with the TE.

I group the years together on my bookshelves. I use a lot of Sonlight, so most of my books have the color label on them. The ones that don't are easy to recognize as far as which year it is. Anyway, I do it this way because my dc re-read most of the books. I don't want to pack them away and keep them from reading good books. My dc know which shelves are for school, and they know that they MUST return the book to the proper shelf. It works nicely for us. Just takes a bit of training at the beginning.

Right now I save all of my school books for my youngest son. I sort my books by school year and place them in 12"X12"X6" wash tubs I found at Wal-mart for $2 each. I put the washtubs in built-in cabinets underneath our built-in bookshelves. I have 6 washtubs for the span in ages I'm dealing with, but as soon as my youngest is done with the books for his school year, I'm planning on getting rid of most of the textbooks I have. I just don't have the storage room to keep everything.

Subject.

I have most of my math and language arts books in a cabinet with doors, but I have a section on one of my bookshelves that house more current ones. For instance, I have fun math books my younger boys would be interested in at their age on the bookshelf, but my other math books are in the cabinet.

Science, history, art, music and literature are all on open bookshelves.

Most of my materials are not devoted to one specific age, so it's easier to keep by subject. I'm not a textbook kind of gal.

If you're referring to storage of curricula not currently in use, I store by grade level.

I hope to accumulate cube storage so that I can do BOTH. :D

If I'm short of space and won't be using certain books for a year, I box them up by subject and stick them in a closet or under a table in the play room.

I cleaned out my bookcases lately and now I just put everything in them, grouped by subject.

The books and supplies we currently use are in a separate bookcase, along with our library books.

This is kind of how I do it also. I was thinking of getting some large clear plastic bins and grouping some of the resources that I have that won't be used for a while, but that I want to save.
