I'm usually great at telling myself to "Get Going!" but it's just not happening lately. I'm in the middle of transitioning to TOG Y2 U2.... we are currently using SOTW2. I have not sat down and planned our Y2U2 yet because I want to get to chapter 35 (on SOTW2) before we begin TOG Y2U2.

TOG Y2U2 starts with week11 The Southern Renaissance -
in SOTW2 starts with The Renaissance in Chapter 35

right now we're only on Chapter 13 in SOTW2 -- I can't seem to just read the chapter and move on. I feel like we should:
1. read chapter 13
2. get library books that are suggested in AG (maybe 1 or 2)
3. do some kind of activity
4. do the maps

I'm so bad at planning (right now) --- because I work part time at home and have a deadline at the end of April (video editing -which take up alot of my night ....wah wah...), plus spring cleaning and getting ready for vacation....

Anyways, I guess I'm just wanting someone to tell me that it's okay to just read the chapter in SOTW2, discuss some, and move on to the next. I just feel like ds does not get enough out of just doing that.

Thanks for listening :bigear:....

Well if your whole Middle Ages experience is getting killed by hating SOTW, then ditch it! You know what I'd do? Toss SOTW entirely (or get the audio) since you obviously aren't clicking with it and get some activity books. There are a ton of good ones for the middle ages, which is what we're doing right now. Let him dress up like a knight. Read Kingfisher books on becoming a knight. Dig up some movies about knights or travels shows about Renaissance festivals. Have a feast. Be kings and queens for a day. Make little sis be the squire and clean, haha. Ok, maybe not. I'm just saying he's too young to ruin your fun doing something you don't like. Put SOTW aside and DO some stuff.

You are allowing perfectionism get in the way of just doing it. In this case something is better than nothing! When we were doing SOTW 2 I was pg. and very sick. Getting to the library and doing projects were the last things on my mind. I was thrilled if we did anything! I could read aloud for about 5 min. before I started coughing so badly I would throw up! There wasn't a ton of reading aloud going on :001_huh: You know what? They survived and even learned stuff! Do a SOTW marathon if that's what you want and get up to the right chapter and then move on to TOG. It will be fine.

Get them from the library or buy them, you'll have independent reading for your oldest which you can share read. Do a picture narration, talk about what you read, and move on. You could do this instead of trying to transition to TOG while in the middle of your lessons. Make lessons for Unit 2 while you're covering the info you want, I wouldn't try to transition to TOG while doing what you're currently (not) doing. Anyways, I hope this makes sense...

We also loved Castles by Philip Steele.

Hope this helps

Okay.... we listened to the audio cd: (thanks Cadam and OhElizabeth)
Chapter 14 yeah! We discussed it some :glare:.
I showed him the AG with how to make the viking ship and was very excited! BIL, just came home from a vacation in Iceland and bought him a viking hat and little viking man- so this was great! We're going to do the ship tomorrow.

I will do one chapter at a time. repeat. I will do one chapter at a time. repeat. I will do it one chapter at a time.

Jessica, I will look up those books in our library. Are the DK books stories? or are they just pictures with details?
How has your history lesson been going? Do you just choose the books you want to read to dd and then discuss it, then some geography? I did something today - I separated Chapter 11 into it's own folder so that I only focus on that.
I know you're such a great planner - do you plan weeks ahead or do you plan the whole Unit.

Thanks.

Your ds is 6? I think it's PLENTY. It's FINE. Be reassured. :) Honestly, with dd6, sometimes we just read SOTW as bedtime stories, I think it's totally fine. (We are doing TOG Y1, btw.)

It's all good.

Just a thought, you could just take your time and enjoy the rest of the SOTW chapters you have left to complete. If your dc learns best with the extra books and projects, (mine definately does) then just take your time and enjoy the ride.;)

That's great! How are you liking TOG Y1? What does your day look like?
Do you:
1. read 1,2,or 3 (assigned/recommended) books?
2. do mapping?
3. create projects?

I'm gonna dive into it before we go on our vacation in May so when we get back - I won't be so overwhelmed.... we'll see .
For now, I'm gonna read SOTW2 aloud or use the cd's and do an activity here and there.
