I inherited a table in MS Word from someone and when I try to change the column widths the table shifts to the left causing part of the table to be off the printing page. huh??? The column widths do not shift in their width but their location relative to where they are on the page shifts. I can't alter the column widths either. HELP! I need to add additional columns and really do not want to build a new table. Haven't found any format keys in the document that is causing this.
Help, please.

Try formating your margins smaller. It is allowing you to insert columns, right? I've had problems w/tables before in MS Word too. It can be maddening. The cells are formatted to wrap? Try smaller type size?

Thanks. You gave me some ideas --- I checked into format / paragraph and found something called, widow/orphan control and clicked it OFF. Then also in table properties, default cell margins I clicked off automatically resize to fit content. whew, I'm on my way again.
