View Full Version : Would you believe a man selling meat from the back of his truck...
Crissy

just knocked on my door.
"Um, hello, Ma'am. I'm with Pacific Meat and Seafood."
"Yes?"
"Someone just down the road cancelled a big order and we're selling meat and seafood for half price."
"From the back of your pick up truck?"
"Uh. Yep."
"You want me to buy meat from the back of a strange man's pick up truck? To feed to my children?"
"Well...yes."
"No."
(crissy closes the door)
Maybe this guy was new to the business, as he wasn't very convincing!
Or maybe after reading about Julpost's ordeal I wasn't very receptive to a meat-pusher.

Lovely.

I'm across the country and we have that here too. Uh, no thanks. I have a source for my meat. It's called the butcher shop!

I live in the Seattle area. I don't think Juls is anywhere near me.

they are just trying to unload the rest of their meat. We get that a lot around hear. We purchased once from the company b/c we'd heard of it before (reputable, too). Good deal, good meat, etc. But, it is usually a sales ploy. If the deal is good, I'll consider, but if not...sorry, Charley. Many people around us purchase meat in big lots from companies who come around with a big truck. I'd be a "little" wary of an unmarked pick-up truck, but otherwise...usually safe!

We had that happen to us, with that same line, in Florida and also in North Carolina. I guess it must be successful sometimes!

--my favorite response is too brusque, too effective, too direct.
I usually just say, "We're vegetarian." They leave immediately. :auto:
That's just boring! I don't get a chance to really enjoy myself. What are yours? I need to branch out a little.

A man came to our door in IL with the same offer last summer. Don't know if it was legit or not.

Doo-doo-doo-doo! (Okay, now that just looks nasty, not creepy! :)) Crissy, your response was the best. If they only knew how their reputation had preceded them, they would never have bothered to knock on the door of a WTMer! You go!

We have had those kind of solicitations a couple times a year one time we even had a furniture guy come through doing the same thing. Strange.

I love that he said that the order was cancelled from a customer. Um..why would that be?
Though your line of wondering why you would take meat from the back of a truck to feed your children was awesome!
Good job, Crissy! LOL!

We used to have a truck come once a year to our neighborhood in Wichita. They always said the same thing they said to you. Some of them could be very pushy and if the check wouldn't have bounced, I'd probably have written them one. I'm a wimp. I really felt for the person who posted that story earlier.
We don't have that problem now down in the sticks, but we were getting those guys knocking on our door -- with the same story -- 30 years ago in "the big city." Pity they haven't been able to come up with any new material! It *was* a lot cheaper then, though!

I've lived here for 10 years, and we've had a man try to sell us meat out of his truck twice. I thought it was the absolute strangest thing ever. I remember calling my brother (who used to live next door), and I told him to be warned that this man was on his way to his door...next thing, I see him walking with the guy to the truck!? My brother didn't buy anything, but still- Why would he even go look? LOL Weird.

That's nutty! A guy saying the same thing came to my house not too long ago. I don't remember the company, but that was definitely his line! We didn't buy. I dropped the old reliable line of "I can't make any purchases like that without talking to my husband." It works like a charm!

Go google door to door meat selling scams (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLJ_enUS216US216&q=door+to+door+meat+selling+scams). The AG in a few states have gotten involved. The quality of the meat is questionable, as well. The whole business is smarmy. There may have been some reputable ones in the past, but these aren't it. And I wouldn't take any chances.
I also started googling the traveling magazine salespeople. Ugh. They place ads for young people, with the promise of an exciting sales career that involves travel. What really happens is nothing of the sort.
I wonder if some of the meat companies don't operate the same way, just traveling all over, like gypsies.

A guy showed up at my door about a year ago saying that he'd refinished someone's driveway down the street and had some stuff leftover and wanted to know if he could do mine.
Uh. Nooooooooooo. :001_huh:
I'd be weirded out if they showed up hawking meat though.

"You want me to buy meat from the back of a strange man's pick up truck? To feed to my children?"
This is exactly the response I would have had. Gross. Who knows where the meat came from (wasn't there a meat recall recently?) and who know how the meat was handled after it was butchered. Gross, gross, gross.
Aside from that, I personally don't purchase anything that is solicited at my door.

Agreed. Some of the people selling stuff "door to door" are casing houses for robbery. It's just not a good idea to let random people off the street into your home or give them your personal information on a cc form or check.

Crissy, this is the best dialogue I think I've read in ages! What a great response, and much better than my measly, "I'd have to talk with my husband to make a purchase that large, thanks." Now I'm going to have to try to get creative...

Darn, Darn, Darn. I could not give you rep for that. But I really wanted to, and do you want to know why? Because you just gave me the script for what I am going to say then next time the meat man cometh to my door.
I usually just say we are vegetarians, but I hate lying.

We've never had that where we live, but the whole "someone down the street canceled" thing reminds me of my telemarketing days (hold the tomatoes, I don't do it anymore - I was 17-18, I'm 31 now ;) ) ....one of the telemarketing jobs I had was for a company that poked holes in people's lawns (um, aerating? something like that) and we were given a list copied directly from a phone book and were told to start the convo (after greeting) with "We've been in your neighbourhood working on your neighbours lawns and we'd like to offer you a discount for our service" blah blah blah.
We were nowhere near their neighbourhood - and that line made for some....... odd moments when the number we called turned out to be an apartment on the eighteenth floor of a building. oops. :tongue_smilie:
(Looking back on that particular job, I'm pretty sure it was a scam from the ground up.)

We've got this crazy sewing lady who drives up our driveway and honks the horn until somebody comes out, usually on a cold day so I have to go get my coat on. When she saw that I saw her through the window she honked all the louder when I didn't come out right away. She asked if I have any sewing or mending to be done and hands me a business card covered in food stains with mildew spots on the back. She's been by twice now. I wasn't very friendly so I hope she doesn't come back...I'll let her honk an hour next time.

Oh, don't get me started on that! Dee-aitch's late grandfather got taken by this scam a few years ago. He had a looooooong driveway, and it cost him a. lot. Of course the "refinishing" began to crumble away in no time.
Recently a different relative, in preparing that very same house for sale, fell for that very same scam from another shyster!!
Why? :banghead::cursing: How in the world did they fall for this, I wonder.
