Hey Heather....by chance was your picture taken at the Muskogee Azalea festival?

Heather in OK
01-24-2008, 02:02 PM
Nope. :) We live in the Tulsa area. We went to Muskogee one year to do our pics and the azaleas weren't that pretty. So we stay here in town (where it's easier to drive by the park and see how the blooms are) instead of going all the way over to Muskogee.

If anyone is interested, Ricky Lake's new documentary, The Business of Being Born will be shown in Tulsa in a few weeks.

Oh, sorry Heather -- I forgot that some of us Oklahomans are sorta new to OK. I live in Norman :)

Heather in OK
01-25-2008, 01:57 PM
LOL...I'm not necessarily new. I've lived here since '94. I'm just not a fan at all of either school so I don't really pay attention or have it cemented in my head which school is in which town.

BarbaraL in OK
01-25-2008, 11:12 PM
Okay, now I'm embarrassed -- I had you confused with someone here who is 'just passing through', military family.

Anyway, I'm not an OU fan either, we just happen to depend on them for our livelihood so we live right here :) Here in Norman, OU is a big deal so it looks like my perspective is skewed and I didn't know it!

This is my first full year of educating my children at home and so far we're having a marvelous time! I have a 4 yr. old daughter in K and a 7 yr. old daughter in 2nd grade. These boards have been a life-saver for me -- providing a wealth of experience 24/7!

We live in Owasso (a suburb just North of Tulsa). I received my undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, but I've been a life-long Sooner football fan. Nice to meet you!!

Barbara ~ No problem!

Hi Linda :) I have a couple of clients right now who lives in Owasso. Nice little town. Do you belong to any homeschool groups in the area? We're in FAITH.

Linda...inOwasso
01-27-2008, 02:24 PM
Yes Heather, my girls participate in the Heartland Home Educators group which meets at Owasso Assembly of God. It's soooo nice to have co-op classes offered 5 minutes from my home! We're used to driving into Tulsa for everything (which isn't that far) but it's still nice to have this so close. My dd7 is taking a Young Rembrandts drawing class and a drama class this semester and dd4 is taking a music & PE class. I've heard of FAITH. I know that Tulsa/Broken Arrow has several large groups to choose from! It's nice to meet you!

My oldest is only 4 1/2, but I'm finding that I'm already feeling isolated. Friends have sent their kiddos to school and are going back to work or getting busy with the PTA. I've looked at a few websites, but I'm not sure what would be a good fit.

Heather in OK

Here's a list:
http://www.tulsahomeeducators.com/html/opengroups.html

Not all are listed there I see. There is another, CHEER (http://www.cheersupport.com/) (Christian group), that is pretty nice. It's a large group but very organized. We were members last year but I returned to FAITH this year.

Are you more interested in a "secular" group or are you looking for a religious group?

snickelfritz
01-28-2008, 05:36 AM
I'm a little uncomfortable with having to sign a "statement of faith" to become a member. Not for religious reasons. I'm a run-of-the-mill Southern Baptist, so I think (as closely as I've looked) that I don't disagree with the statements. It just seems nit-picky.

I've looked at HERO a bit, but I just haven't run into people that know anything about them.

Heather in OK
01-28-2008, 12:15 PM
I'm probably not a big help then. I'm not familiar at all with non-Christian groups out there or if there are any religious-based ones that don't have statements of faith. You could probably email T.H.E. and ask.

Linda...inOwasso
01-29-2008, 10:24 AM
Oh Snickelfritz, how I wish there was a vibrant group in the Tulsa area that was not exclusive based on a religious statement. The only one I know of is Cornerstone and it's a great group of people, but they only meet once a month for a support type meeting. They don't have any co-ops set up -- it's participant-driven and I think most people just do their own thing.

We finally just joined the group here in Owasso (which has a faith statement), because I wanted my girls to be able to participate in some of the classes, activities, field trips, etc... but it hasn't provided much of a support for me personally. I am a Christian BUT I do not believe in excluding other people simply because they don't share my views. If memory serves me, that's not how Jesus lived his life either.

I'm completely new here, as in never was on the old boards either.

I feel a bit like I'm running a personal classified ad!:D

Catholic
married to non-Catholic, but awesome man for 15 years
with kids (6 girls and 2 boys so far)

will play nice with anyone else who plays nice

I'm in a catholic hs group, which oddly enough doesn't require a faith statement, but catholics are only about 5% of the population here, and even less when you figure how many of that 5% are homeschooling, so it's not a very robust group.

I am leery of faith statements too.

Maybe what we need to do is start up a "We refuse to sign homeschool group faith statements" support group?;)

Anyone wanna come play?:)

Hi there, mommahawk -- I'm glad you introduced yourself :) The first year of HSing is like nothing else! This is my third year HSing; my first year I only had our younger son at home, and the second year our older son joined us. That was another big adjustment. But it has been so very worthwhile.

I hope we'll see you over on the K-8 Curriculum board (area? forum?); it's a great place for questions and support.

Hi there... Just got off the phone with dh who is in the Army Reserves. He is away for the next 30 days instructing, but just called to let me know he was asked to put in for a position in Tulsa.

Please, someone HELP me! Really, I've been so consumed over the past few months researching all things homeschooling/curriculum, etc. and just as I feel comfortable with our decisions I have something else to consume me. :)

So... anyone from Tulsa care to e-mail me so that you can give me the low down on what area(s) to look for homes, churches, school districts (youngest is slated to start K in the fall... we were planning on ps). Really... my head is spinning... and I need a big, fat :chillpill:!!!!

Thank you :)

Oh, my e-mail is laura s 74 @tds . net

I've never done the spacing thing with e-mail, but I see it done all the time, surely there is a reason?

feel free to contact me. Tulsa is just like anywhere else - it's got it's pros and cons. There's many homeschool support groups, the state as a whole is very hs friendly. housing is not being hit here nearly as badly as in just about any other state, so you should be able to find a home withut undue fuss.

I have a dd9 & ds12. I do things with a small group of friends that range from 6 to 15 years old. We have gone to the sheep farm in Claremore, the fort at Fort Gibson, & Murrell Home in Tahlequah. We haven't really done anything real local. Just looking for some ideas. If anyone has anything they really enjoyed I would love to try it. Thanks!

It would be great for that wide of an age range. It has hands-on science exhibits, IMAX theatre, planetarium, etc...

Oxley Nature Center--In Mohawk Park where the Tulsa zoo is. They do guided nature tours.

The June Tulsa Kids magazine had some neat ideas:
*Berry picking (could probably google berry farms.)
*Parking the car for the day and riding the transit system. I believe it hits Philbrook and Gilcrease.
*PAC productions
*Farmers Markets (there were several around Tulsa)

When you're in Tulsa, look for the free Tulsa Kids magazine. The July edition doesn't have the huge list of activities, but there is always a calendar of events in the back. Free musical productions in parks, childrens theatre, etc... I know you can find them in the magazine racks as you leave Toys R Us.

Thanks for the ideas. I am really trying to find some "odd" places anyone may have gone and really enjoyed. For example we went to see the Tomato Man in the Glenpool/Sapulpa area. We learned all kinds of things about heirloom plants and different types of tomatoes. We even learned that the best fertilizer is sheep doo! I think that these are my favorite fieldtrips. I do enjoy going to the Philbrook on the second Sat. of each month. They have free admission and a self-guided tour that covers some area of art followed by a craft project downstairs. Everything is absolutely free.

Wow, I'm slow getting back to this. I belong to CHEER and it meets at my church, Cedar Ridge Christian Church near 101st and Garnett. We aren't meeting for the summer, but will start in September.

BTW, since everyone seems to be doing a bit of intro- I've hs'd for 13 years and currently have at home dd14 (in a few days) and ds10. Would sure love some socialization options for ds, but something that doesn't take us away during school hours. We've lived in OK exactly one year.

At this point, I prefer things that don't require joining committees and attending mandatory meetings. THAT'S the kind of commitment I like. :D

We were in CHEER for a while but switched back to FAITH. :) CHEER is a great group. Very well organized and wonderful Ladies Meetings. I still see a few of the ladies from the group since my girls belong to the Girl Scout group that was started through CHEER. It just wasn't the homeschool group for us anymore.

Since I posted that I didn't want to join, I've come across a reason that I may join.

My dd (5) has started repeatedly saying that she wants to go to school. I think the culprit is all of the well meaning people that she talks the ear off of when we're out and about. Once they find out she's 5, they start asking about starting school next year. Going to kindergarten, etc... This happens over and over and over.

We do a few activities with mostly traditionally schooled kids. Dance, gymnastics, & BSF. I'm also talking with a friend about doing a once a month informal coop. Make crafts, cook something, valentine party, etc.. But, she also just has 2 kids.

I'm seriously thinking I should also join a homeschool group, so she can feel "normal."

Whadya think? If I don't *have* to go to meetings, we can skip them when we're feeling busy.

Also, I've read through their faith statement. I'm fine with most of it. We're Christians, go to a Baptist church, and attend Bible Study Fellowship. BUT, I would probably be called an "old earth creationist." When the statement of faith says that it's against "secular humanist beliefs" and includes evolution.....what does that mean? I don't feel the need to debate people about the different creation views, but I also will not lie to get into the group. Does that make sense?

As for good reasons to join a group....my children really like the social aspect of doing fieldtrips and group activities with other children occasionally.....I really like doing those with children of like-minded parents that usually have very similar expectations of their children.

As for "secular humanist beliefs"....I believe that that means that they don't believe that man evolved from monkey......"old earth" VS "new earth" creation is a debate among christian. I think that there seem to me an almost even number of the two. And there are those who choose not to try to fathom all the complexities of the scienctific evidence VS the bible. If you feel that creation is not the issue but that "old" VS "new" earth is - just ask if it is a problem. Then you can join with a clean conscience. I am glad that you hesitate to sign something you are not sure you agree with. Shows great moral fiber! I would give you a high-5 for that if we were not on a message board! LOL!! Seriously, I am going to look into it b/c I was considering CHEER myself and would have the same issue. I will let you know what I discover.

I've talked it over with dh and he thinks that joining a homeschool group is a good idea, so that dd can realize there are lots of of homeschoolers and she can feel more "normal." In reading through the membership requirements, you have to attend 2(???) meetings before you join. So, that will give me a chance to check it out and make sure that everything is "copacetic."

I miss homeschooling in Oklahoma. We were all born and raised there. We moved here to Nevada about 3 1/2 months ago for my husband's work. We were really spoiled there in Oklahoma. I just went to the convention here and it is nothing like back home. Homeschool sports are pretty much non-existant here. But there are other things that we are getting involved in and are looking for a home church. We found a good homeschooling group. It is small but there are good kids for mine to interact with.

If you might have a mind to pray for some fellow Okies, please say one for us.

Thanks for letting me ramble on.

Blessings all

Hey Erica, have you considered Classical Conversations? There's a wonderful group in Tulsa that meets at Asbury (which wouldn't be far from you at all.) The kids spend a lot of time together so they're able to form real friendships. My girls and I are joining for 2008-09. They start up just after Labor Day.

FYI: There's a practicum in Tulsa July 23 - 25 for moms & their children. It's FREE for parents and the kids attend camp while their parents are learning classical teaching methods. The cost for each child is $30 and it runs from 9am - 4pm. Not bad, huh?!

Anyway, if you're looking for a summer boost and could use a few days of like-minded fellowship you might want to check it out!

I guess my real question is what do people do with their younger dc while older ones are in CC? My youngest will be 3 in Sept. Do we just hang out around the building? Disappear?

Hmmm..Dd is doing an art camp at TCC from 9-10 that week. Which would only be a small amount of time missed on Wed and Thurs. I'll have to look into it a little more.

I live in broken arrow and am looking for nearby hs-ing moms too. I'm in a catholic group, but they really don't have anything for me or my kids. No activities.

I just want to meet some moms, share some coffee, let the kids play, maybe go to the zoo together. Nothing requiring statements of faith or committee commitments. Just good old fashioned mom homeschooling support, kwim? And I really can't afford to drive all over town in my 12 passenger van. Gas prices = Ouch.

I am going to check out the entymology department first. Do you have any contact information on that?

Have any of you gone to the sheep farm in Claremore? It is really neat for all ages. The lady takes you through the sheep farm and teaches you all about the sheep and at the same time she correlates the sheeps needs with what is written in the 23rd Psalm. It is truly fascinating! I believe the farm is called Shepherd's Cross.

Stillwater. I would think a 1st grader and k'er would love it, but only if they are okay with real live bugs and wouldn't freak out. The lady there pulled out huge hand sized centipedes, those thumb sized cockroaches, spiders and LOTS more. All kiinds of really cool stuff. They talked about making anti-venom and the kids had a great time.

In most groups one of two things happen--either there is childcare as an option or you keep your little ones with you while you sit in the class with your other children. For 6th grade and under the mom stays with their dc. If you have multiple dc in different rooms you can stay with the one who needs your attention the most or move around a little. The idea is mentoring for the moms as well as the tutoring for the dc.

Just show up to the first meeting? The website says the 2nd Tuesday. So, starting in August?

I don't think I'm ready to commit to Classical Conversations. I think it makes more sense to do it when my younger dd is also ready for it. The year that they are 7 and 5, they will have aged out of going to BSF during the day and we can transition to Classical Conversations.

Martha--There is a group of homeschoolers that meet at Martin Library, which isn't far from North Broken Arrow. About 31st and Garnett, I think. What general area of BA are you in? I'm north.

The group is called Cornerstone. The only drawback, for me, was that they seemed to be more relaxed homeschoolers(based on reading their yahoo group postings.) I need encouragement on the path I've chosen. Otherwise, there are no committees or faith statements. You just show up to the meetings and sign up if you want to go to an activity that someone has organized. If you want to do certain a field trip, you organize it and advertise it to the group.

Thanks Martha!

I believe the farm is called Shepherd's Cross.

yes, that's the dept. (and the correct spelling I think too. argh! where's my glasses and why can't my typing keep up with my thoughts?) I don't have the contact info since it's been about 2 years and a move since we went.

interesting... sheep...
I actually grew up in a zoo and around cattle, so I have to constantly remind myself that I need to actually take my children to such things, possibly even paying and driving out of my way for such a thing to see... I guess I just have to wrap my brain around the notion that sheep IS an attraction to see to most other people, including my own kids.:D

Yup, that's it. There will be an information table when you go in and you'll just tell them you're a visitor. They'll give you an info pkt about the group, etc. Then you can come in and stay. Be prepared for a large group. If you're coming you can contact me and we can sit together! Cool.

In the morning at a park not too far off of HW 169? PM me if you're interested, and we can figure out details. I do have a specific park in mind, with bathrooms, playground, duck pond, etc.... I can tell you where via PM.

Okie probably knows better as things have probably changed but when we joined, we were put in the New To CHEER team first until we got more familiar with the group. I stayed in that group and actually led it for a while so I didn't get experience with any others.

I might be interested in meeting up the first week of August (4-8). I think I know the park you speak of. LOL

Oh, I'm so bad about getting back to these threads:blushing:. I can do the 7th.

I've only been in CHEER for one year (and I don't really do anything but the once a month support mtg), and I joined one month before being automatically being put on the 'new to CHEER' team, so I was on the hospitality team. The meetings start at 7pm and usually go close to 9pm. It is an adult only mtg.

Ethan - 8 & 4th grade (to his shock, he's watching me type and said he was in 3rd grade and I said nope - 4th!)

We are a former military family (although they do say "Once a marine...always a marine!) but I know what you mean. Homeschooling seemed very popular in the military and I would think that more moms would be on from a base town. Maybe you will have to advertise around the base. You know.....Needed: Classical Home Educators to share ideas on a message board. :001_smile: It seems hard to find area homeschoolers in OK - the groups are so fragmented. In Pensacola we had pretty much just on group with smaller cell groups that were divided by location or area of interest. I am still looking for other like-minded hs families in the Sapulpa area. If there are any of you out there please let me know....

Well, I was all hyped and ready to go to park this morning to meet some new people.
I was even going to be about 20 minutes early.
Then this stupid truck pulling a flatbed trailer acted stupid and dumped part of its stupid load across lanes into traffic.
And wouldn't you know that the only decorator concrete brick to land on my side of the road landed right under my front left tire and busted it.
I had to pull right into the southcrest hospital diagnostic parking lot and call dh to come change the flat.
No worries though because thanks to my gung-ho attitude, we had plenty of time to change a flat and still get to park.
Then Dh came and even with his drills couldn't get the caps off.
So he dropped the oldest 4 home with his little pontiac sunfire while I waited with the other 4 for him to come back and shuttle us home too.
Now he's calling AAA to come fix the flat, the LAST thing any man wants to do. 1 because no man likes to admit he can't fix a flat tire and 2 we really cannot afford to pay for it. (We didn't have a membership, but do now because it was cheaper to get a membership than pay for a single trip out.) All rather humbling to him and THAT has put him in a rather yucky mood.

So I hope you all made it and had a great time and I hope to be invited if you gather again. It's 9:30, and AAA says they should have it done in less than an hour, but then dh has to shuttle us again and all that, so it's pretty much a wash out for us this time around.

So disappointed.:(

I went with a couple friends. Wow - it was a fully packed house wasn't it? It was interesting. They seemed pretty nice and organized. I don't know if it's for me though. I'm just looking for a bunch of hs-ers who want to share some coffee and conversation, maybe the occassional field trip. I don't need or want workshops and team committments or the whole beaucratic system thing. I might reconsider though because my older 2 boys really want to meet some other hs-ers their age and so far there aren't any around. Cheer is supposed to have a VERY large middle and high school group.

So I'm still undecided.

We are in Classical Conversations -- meeting at Asbury in Tulsa. It's a wonderful group, but full. So, I'm going to direct a new CC community in Owasso next year. Anyway, the Tulsa group is awesome for providing support in the classical method.

Linda,
We go to Christ Presbyterian. Our homeschool group isn't big -- usually less than 10 at the meetings, probably 20 or so families on the list A couple of the families in our group attend Classical Conversations. We went to one of the visitor days in the spring (and my dd LOVED it), but since it's about 30 miles from our house, I decided that the gas would add up WAY too quickly (along with all of the other fees and such). Now if they could just schedule it on Wednesday, when we already come to town for awana.... ;)

Just in case you're interested... the Tulsa Asbury CC group is FULL. However, 3 of us who are currently in the group are going to direct additional campuses for next year. This will open up several slots in the Asbury group (which is awesome!)

I don't know where you live, but I'm going to direct a campus in Owasso (not sure of the day we'll meet yet.)

There will be a campus in Broken Arrow and another one in the SW Tulsa area. I don't think those directors have established a date yet either, but if you'd like the email address of the directors, just let me know.

It would hit music AND art and, possibly, choir in the morning. The other thing is that I had decided to do Classical Conversations and I don't think I would do both. That would be 2 days in a row that were pretty much gone. But, they both include so much....

I need to have a good talk with dh and sit down and think about our goals for our homeschool.

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

I had never heard of MAFA (probably wouldn't since I am in Bville) so I went to their website to check it out. It looks like a very good program. Both MAFA and CC have different focuses so it really depends on what areas you would need the most support in.

I know the stress though....I don't like it when I have TOO many good choices! :001_smile: Are you still going to the CC Open House Feb. 20th? It would be neat to meet those that I know through the WTM boards!

The thing is--dh really wants me to be the one "teaching" the majority of the content. He's not so sure about CC, because it eventually does teach so much. I figure that I've got some time before that AND I have less confidence in myself. I'm a math and science person and I have a degree in those areas. I feel very comfortable teaching those subjects. I'm less confident teaching writing, English, Latin, etc... which seems like a strength of CC in the upper levels. I would have an easier time convincing him, if they didn't also kind of take over teaching the math.

BUT, I also want the kiddos to have a well-rounded art experience. And MAFA definitely seems like it would provide that. And dh would be completely on board with me delegating that part of their education out to others.

LauraJ
02-11-2009, 04:00 PM
and I wholeheartedly agree!! My husband is the big math and science guy at our home and he teaches those subjects to the kids. He mentioned the exact same thing!! He wants to continue teaching them math at home. Did you know you can choose to opt out of different subjects in the Challenge courses? You could just enroll your children in the debate, rhetoric, exposition and research classes and not the math class. You will not have to pay full price either. I will be offering a "study hall" classroom where students can go to do homework during the class where they opt out of.

Someone else more experienced may be able to explain it better on here but from what I have heard, CC doesn't want to take the responsibility of teaching off from you, they just want to support you providing accountability. That is what I LOVE about it! I am still their primary teacher the other four days of the week helping them with their work. I wouldn't be doing CC if that role was taken from me.

HTH! :)

We just move to Grove, on Grand Lake and an hour northeast of Tulsa. How can I find out about MAFA? And where did you see that there is a CC meeting this month? On the web link, the first Tulsa meeting that I could find was on March 22, I think. Any info on activities that are beginning now would be much appreciated! We left all our friends in Little Rock. I have three boys, grades 6, 4 and K. We can't wait to meet new faces!

I had emailed the Tulsa director of CC and she told me about the info meeting. There is an open house where you can go observe next Friday (Feb 20th.)

For CC, you can go on their website at www.classicalconversations.com (http://www.classicalconversations.com) and click on Oklahoma and then click on "view events" under Oklahoma calendar. They also have informational meetings on April 6th and May 9th at the Hardesty Library there in Tulsa. There are two other new CC classes starting up in Bartlesville and Owasso in the fall that will have info meetings happening soon but no dates set yet.

WHAT IS MASTER’S ACADEMY?

If you haven’t heard about Master’s Academy of Fine Arts, come and join the band-wagon with many others who are welcoming this exciting home school arts program to the Tulsa area. Master’s Academy has been in existence since 1991 and currently has 14 schools running in the USA. Students enjoy learning about art, drama, music and history in a specific time period, starting with Ancient Civilization taught with a Biblical foundation.

Each Master Academy Core class is instructed by a professional skilled and educated staff member, and is designed to teach each individual student to have a love for learning and developing skills in the arts. Master Institute classes are options or electives offered before and after the core program which may include dance, private or group music lessons, karate, art club, choir and many more. All classes meet ONE day a week in ONE location. Read on!

WHEN AND WHERE WILL MASTER’S ACADEMY MEET?

Current plans are being made to meet on Thursdays with the MAFA core program starting at 12:30 pm until 4:00 pm. Master Institute classes will be offered in the morning tentatively starting at 9:00 am. Plans are in the process of securing a location at the Green Country Event Center on 31st and Garnet. Classes will tentatively begin August 13th, 2009 and continue, with breaks for about 24 weeks, or until early spring.

WHAT IS THE COST AND HOW CAN YOU REGISTER?

MAFA is geared with you in mind for financial flexibility and greater choices. The cost of Master’s Academy of Fine Arts core program is $625 per year per student, with discounts given when more than one sibling is enrolled. A one-time registration fee ($150), supply fee ($50) and insurance fee ($30) will apply for each student registered.

Online registration will be available March 1st at www.MAFA.net. BUT, if you register prior to March 1st you will save $70. If you register between March 1 and May 1, you will save $50 on registration. After May 1, registration fee will be $150. To register early and have a form emailed or mailed to you, please contact the Tulsa Director, Theresa Roman, at (MAFAofTulsa at yahoo dot com)or go to www.MAFA.net and download the form and mail it in. Savings is good!

I was really excited to get this email. It looks like MAFA-Tulsa will be a GO after all.

I'm so glad -- it has the potential to be a great program! I'm hoping to be able to swing it financially along with CC.

Hello again ladies :)

I haven't had much time to post much on the WTM boards. I remembered a few of you were in CHEER. :) Lately I've been toying with the idea of rejoining and will be at the April meeting. I know a few people from the first time we were in the group but I'd love to meet those of you from here. :)

I'll be there with baby in tow. The last meeting was great! I really haven't had a chance to get my oldesr boys as invovled as I'd like (purely MY fault and not the groups), but I must admit the moms meetings have been very uplifting and encouraging, which I really need right now.

Just wanted to let you know I'm hosting an information meeting Monday, March 23rd at the Owasso Public Library if anyone is interested. We're meeting from 6 - 8 p.m.

If you have any friends in the Owasso area that are interested in CC, please let them know!

Thanks,

Do any of you know if there is an active NCFCA (National Christian Forensics & Communications Assocatian) in Oklahoma?? www.ncfca.org (http://www.ncfca.org). I have emailed them for more information and haven't heard anything yet. If not NCFCA, are you aware of any other Speech and Debate teams for homeschoolers in the Tulsa area?? We will be starting up Classical Conversations in Bartlesville which will have Speech and Debate but there are some students transferring from our local Classical Christian school to Classical Conversations that were used to Speech and Debate being a very competitive full year curriculum that they traveled to tournaments, etc.... NCFCA is like that for homeschoolers. Just curious.

Hey Okies!

I am Leslie, mom to three - 9 and 6 year old sons and a 4 year old daughter. This is our second year hsing and we are loving it. I went to a CC meeting last weekend in Owasso (nod to Linda!) and am very interested in this so went looking online for some support/info and found this board. We have been very mix and match the last two years - doing different publishers, grades, etc, etc for each kiddo so I am a little nervous to commit to CC...but like what I see so far!

It is cool to see so many close by on here and I look forward to getting to know more of you :)

yes, that was me.:blushing:

I had to cut out early at about 8:15 because the baby was starting to get really fussy. I think my question came out wrong and I was too distracted by baby to get any clearer. oh well. They reminded me of several things that I know I need to do and actually did a lot before the baby came. I guess I just need to get back into our regular routine.

Hi Ladies,
I am so happy I found this thread! We moved to the Tulsa area last summer and we have decided to homeschool our daughter. I attended the Classical Conversation info meeting in Tulsa back in February (I think) and I am planning on joining the group in Owasso.

This will be our first year to homeschool and I am really starting to get cold feet:001_unsure: Today was her last day at a MDO program and I feel so out of the loop as all the other kids will go to preschool this fall. Would love to meet other homeschoolers!

We tried CHEER last year and I'm opting not to re-join. It's a great group, no complaints. It's just not for me. I found myself dreading the committee meetings and the moms meetings. Our evenings are somewhat busy and I like to protect our free evenings.

So..

I've looked up internet stuff on some other groups, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with any others?

I'm considering the Cornerstone group that meets that Martin library. Seems much less structured. I'm looking for activities that are available, but not required. Park days and pumpkin patches. I want to avoid night meetings and committee requirements.

The introvert in me is wanting to avoid having to go to multiple first meetings. :tongue_smilie:

TAHS? they are free and they meet for a playdate every Friday from 1 - 3 at the rec ctr in BA. very relaxed, they do themes on fridays to make it fun, some field trips but nothing is required at all. a lot of them are in or used to be in cornerstone and decided they needed something more relaxed. And they are a very relaxed bunch of gals (said in a totally nice way). It's a come when you can, don't sweat it when you can't kind of group. I've only been to one Friday, so I can't say more than that they seem like a nice bunch so far.

I've been on the loop for a month or so and been to 1 Friday.
Seem like a friendly comfy bunch of ladies so far. And best of all is I don't have to leave my kids at home to meet them - a HUGE pain in most groups.

I've already signed up for CHEER next year. I want the highschool connections for my older boys. Though we'll have to see if that actually happens.

We're down there every few months. My mom lives in The Village. We actually went to the Science Museum on Memorial Day weekend... the zoo was packed, but the museum was dead! I'm not a crowd person, so that made me soooo happy. We have been to the zoo and Myriad Gardens, and my dad and stepmom want to "kidnap" my kids and take them to Frontier City.

I suppose so.
but I guess that presumes tht one or the other can compete, whereas I'm sure that one or the other says the other is not competition at all.;):D

Personally, I really like OKC.

Tulsa drives me batty with the irrational addiction to the 2 black holes: downtown and woodland hills area. *shudder* I can't stand either of those areas.

It's just so much lower key. No committee meetings, etc... Their meetings consist of the moms sitting around and talking while the kids play, which is what the kids and I both need. We do plenty of structured activities, so it's nice for the kids to just be able to play with the same group of kids on a consistent basis.

Now, next week...their meeting is on Thursday because of the 4th. So, it might be a good day for you to try it out and make it easier to get involved in some of the field trips (or is it just me that feels odd going when I know NO ONE?). They're doing a cookout. You can get on the email list and at least you'll know about their activities.

I may or may not be at the TAHS thing tomorrow. I was at a birth all day yesterday and got home at 1:30am. I didn't get a lot done today since I was running on not much sleep. Which means that I got behind here at home. Need to catch up on laundry, some school work, cleaning...ya know, all the fun stuff. I'll have to see how my morning goes.

Well, I wound up missing after all... DS woke up this morning in a horrid mood and DD wasn't much better. They're both napping now - odd for my kids. I think DS is starting a growth spurt, and I don't know what's up with DD. In any case, I was bummed!

...someone else that doesn't live in Tulsa? :-)

I live about 20 minutes outside of OKC. We go in, often, for activities, field trips...and dinner. :D (Eating out is my passion, lol.)

I just found this thread so I thought that I'd chime in. I also live about 20 minutes outside of OKC. We go into OKC, Norman or Moore often. We eat dinner out every Friday, usually in Moore, and we watch movies at Warren often.

Any other OKC area homeschoolers out there?

A kindred spirit. :D

I just watched a movie at the Warren in the balcony for the first time, a couple of weeks ago (Public Enemies). It's awesome!

Do you guys go to the OKC zoo often? Once it cools down, we should have a meet up.

Jill,

Yes, we go to the Zoo. In fact, we just went there a couple of weekends ago when the high was in the low 90's. It wasn't too bad but still toasty.

I have been up in the balcony a couple of times. It is great but at $18 per person it is a luxury we don't get to experience often.

You should PM me sometime so that we can maybe set up a time to meet.

We're in Edmond. Dh has said he wants to go to the WArren. Zoo sounds good. It was scorching last time we were there. Hopefully it will cool down.

Anyone in the Muskogeee area? New to homeschooling and VERY excited about The Well Trained Mind! I am so thankful to have a guidebook to classical education. I have ordered in Story of the world, Writing With Ease and First Language Lessons after reading WTM. We will also be using Saxon Math, Shurley English, Handwriting Without Tears, Science, Latin and anything else I can fit into the schedule. Would love to find some like minded folks in our area.

Sorry I've been MIA and missed this! We're on the Tulsa side of Haskell, but it's only about 30 minutes to Muskogee.

How old are your kiddos? I know 4 or 5 other families in Haskell that homeschool and at least one in Muskogee. (The Muskogee family has older kids, high school aged.) We sometimes go to a Down Syndrome Support group (that's the Muskogee group but actually meets in Ft. Gibson).

Apparently I keep forgetting to check back also! LOL My kids are 8 and 7. I understand that there are quite a few Muskogee homeschoolers but I can't seem to find them. I don't think they really "advertise" themselves. Wish we were able to join the TAHS for activities but constant trips to Tulsa just aren't in the schedule right now. We drive through Haskell to go to Tulsa, it's not a bad drive.

We started "school" on Aug. 3rd and we are loving it!!! The kids are really enjoying the classical method.

Anyone in Tulsa have your kids in the Homeschool Choir? Is it worth it? Do they require parents to volunteer?

I do and so do several people I know. I do not think they require volunteering, altho I'm sure it is appreciated. I know I will not be volunteering. I just don't have time or a babysitter for my other kids!

dd wanted to do violin this year and had to drop some activities to do it....one of them was choir. She enjoyed it and we would consider doing it again.

volunteering--they ask for volunteers a few times. Like for the Christmas play, It wasn't mandatory. If you could volunteer, you did. I volunteered to put on stage makeup. We practiced during one regular choir time and then I got to the play a little early. Some moms helped with costumes. They asked one time and I never heard anything else about it. Seems like they had some people help with setting up for the reception.

As far as regular volunteers, last year, they had 2 or 3 moms that were always helpers in the room. I don't recall them asking for everyone else to rotate in for that. I always stayed downstairs with my younger dd or sometimes ran errands.

I don't know if anyone is watching this thread anymore but I just ran across it tonight so I thought I would add myself to this list.

I have two sons who are just turning 4 years old so we are still in the preliminary stages of homeschooling. We are really just doing fun stuff and playing as we learn about counting and reading. Lots of playing, play dough, cutting, coloring and that sort of fun stuff. Everything we do right now is informal, although I toy with the idea of adding a bit more formal structure at times.

We are in south Tulsa, although we have purchased a lot in Owasso. We have our home up for sale (by owner) and are hoping it sells soon. We are working with an architect to design our new home but we will not start building until we sell our current home.

I would love to meet some local mom's from this forum. I agree with a previous poster that it is starting to get lonely, now that everyone's littles are attending preschool. My email address is lea@pisarik.com, if anyone wants to contact me. Thanks!

Welcome! I'm a new homeschooler myself, this being my first year. My son turns 7 this week. There are lots of different homeschooling groups in the Tulsa area, and there are lots of homeschoolers! Glad to "meet" you!

Hey There,
I have a friend who might be moving to the Duncan area. Who knows what it's like... and is Homeschooling still great in OK? Are the lots of groups around Duncan?

Don't know anything about groups in the Duncan area, but homeschooling is still great here! Homeschooling is protected in our state's constitution, so there's no reporting, no required testing, nada. The only requirement that I am aware of is that you do have to provide 180 days of school per year, but I believe "day" is defined pretty loosely, too.

Hello Ladies ~

I live in southwest OKC, nice to meet you! I recently joined TWTM forum and was happy to see this thread as I have been exploring coops in the area. I HS my DD 11 (my one and only) and we are involved with a CC Essentials program in north OKC but wondered about coops in the South OKC/Norman area. There seem to be very few in this area. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

New to to WTM board ...

I've been back in OK for a couple years now ... during football season I try very hard to not go into "town" on a game day!
OSU games that is ... when they play at home traffic is horrid!

That being said ... I am not living IN the city there, but about 10 miles outside.

Anyone care to guess where? ;)
