Can someone explain all the bee references?

I lurked here off and on for awhile then recently signed up with a username and all that... but never have I seen any explanation of all the various bee and beekeeping references throughout the forum. Can anyone explain the reasoning behind the motif in general as well as the seemingly enormous number of various beekeeping levels attached to people's accounts? I've been on a few forums with levels that are tied directly to post counts, but this seems to be above and beyond that.

The bee titles are tied to post count and nothing more. In its previous incarnation the members of this board jokingly referred to the board as "the hive mind." It officially became "the hive mind," complete with bee jokes in its present incarnation. :D
