Have you asked anyone from the co-op? I thought a few years ago there was a WTM group for younger elementary ages, but I don't know if that group is still going. I'll ask around and pm you if I hear of anything. :)

Hi:-)
I sent you an email with my phone number, but in case it ends up in spam, the meeting is this Friday (August 8th) at 7pm meeting at
Immanuel Reformed Church 4653 Sunnyview Rd NE Salem OR 97305
I will be going through the Trivium stages, so what basic Classical Education is based on...and how Classical Conversations as a weekly program can fit into the Education goals that you have for your family.
CC is very family oriented, and so with this in mind, your younger children are welcome to come and be with the group as we go through the lessons.
CC has a great grammar program and we do lots of fun activities, songs and experiments in the process.

My dh is already there...we are starting our very first business (and I am scared to death!). We currently live in Pierce County, WA. I am working to get our house rented out, and then we hope to rent in/around Portland for somewhere around $1,000 per month to keep our expenses as low as possible. Can we find something decent that will hold all of us for that much? I know that it will be a sacrifice- we are moving from a pretty big house- but I am excited about what the future has to hold. (and I love Portland!)
I would love some links to co-ops and homeschool loops, as well as any advice that you may have regarding places to live.
Thanks in advance!

IEW seminar would be for adults for sure, and hopefully some of the student seminars, too. I'd especially like the one for the SAT for my oldest.
For co-ops, there's First Class (is that what it's called?) in PDX and then we have Classical Conversations in Salem and will probably have at least one in the immediate PDX area for this coming school year.

Isn't the snow pretty? and the dog's feet don't track in all that mud.....Snow is much cleaner :)

Hey Everyone,
Anyone new in Oregon:-) How's everyone liking the snowwwww??

I grew up in the part of Oregon that has several feet of snow at least 4 months of the year. Only got one snow day the whole time I was in High School. It snowed 3ft over night (not unusual), but someone was out sick and din't get the superintendent's street plowed. I think one of the kids bribed someone. :D
I now live in the city and here it is not the snow that bothers me (I know how to drive in the snow) but the idiots who think just because you have a 4x4 you can drive like it's a normal sunny day, then think something is wrong with the vehicle when it doesn't stop on a dime. :001_huh:

It'd be really fun to have a big get together in the PDX area some time, just for a park day or anything like that. Since I don't live in Portland, I would need someone else to suggest a place.

I have heard of it. I'm pretty sure that it's the one that a family in our (kinda old) church... his father owns it... I've never been but our youth group goes up there....There's an inside play place in Salem...and also some decent McDonalds...and if it's a warm enough day...we have a really nice park in Silverton (close to where you'd be camping)
I don't know if you'd be at all interested...but our homeschool group uses Classical Conversations for our weekly program....we meet on Wednesdays....(It's tuition based) we also have free practicums...the next one for us is in June (in Portland) the actual practicum is free...although if you want to do kids camps...they cost about $35(each child) for the three "days" This time we're actually meeting from 3pm-9pm in hopes that some dads can come...(for the 6-9 part, especially..although my husband can't)
We also are doing some other things like field trips...and hopefully more. We're trying to grow the group into more "support" as well as meeting for our weekly group. We have moms in our weekly group that drive up to an hour (both ways) each week, but I'd like to have a "mom's night" this next year...we'll see how it goes.

It was great! So glad I went - I was still a little bit on the fence about homeschooling but this conference helped me make a commitment. It really was great to see the books - I heard from another attendee that there used to be more vendors, but to this newbie there seemed to be enough.

It wasn't so much the curriculum but the speakers that confirmed, at least in my opinion, why I thought homeschooling was important.
I looked through Rod & Staff, I saw Math U See and RightStart, which was great. It was very nice to see before buying, which I haven't done yet. I'm waffling now between Kolbe Academy and CLAA.
If you live in the Portland Metro area, my SIL goes to Exodus, http://www.exodusbooks.com/, and the staff there are very knowledgeable of curriculums, and they have a used curriculum section.

Oh yes, I've checked OCEAN, and my group always shows up in the search :) but there really isn't much else. We are getting people who want to join us but they live quite a long ways away, but there doesn't seem to be any other groups on OCEAN. Most of the search results are for Chocboard, and multi-day/week co-ops.
If other groups are out there, I guess they wish to remain secret.

I am looking for anyone in the Portland area who might be able to help me with some long distance questions about moving there. There is a really good chance my husband landed a job in Portland (we should know for sure on Thursday) so am trying to figure things out on how to make the move from Colorado there.
He will be working at PDX so we would be looking for a neighborhood within commuting distance. There are 3 of us and two dogs (1 large). I would love to find a house to rent but am guessing that will be tough to find under $1000 that will allow dogs? Any areas to avoid?

Hi There!!
Welcome to Oregon :) I can't be of more help, because "commuting" around here... has been about 30-90 minutes each way for my husband :( This is the closest he's worked in 10 years, and so our 30-45 minutes seems short.. compared :) (And he likes the job! Bonus!!)
Depending on what side he's working... I like Wilsonville and also Canby :)

Hi, you'll need to be more specific about where the job is before we could advise you of good neighborhoods. I've seen really cool, reasonably priced homes in the Milwaukie area, but that won't help you if he is working in Northwest Portland. Azalea

Thanks for the reply! He is going to be working at Portland International Airport. Looking at the possibility of Vancouver as well. However not sure what traffic is like in the morning commute. He is starting on graveyard shift so I guess normal rush hour is not a huge issue at this time.

Near PDX, hmmm... that gives lots of options. I worked near there and had a co-worker that lived on a houseboat. Most of my co-workers chose to live in Vancouver. At least at that time, it was financially the right choice. I wonder if his HR dept. might have some advice about the advantages/disadvantages of living in Wash. and working in Oregon.

Living on a houseboat sounds interesting!
They are flying him out tomorrow for the day to take a look around and make sure everyone is happy, so I asked him to start asking some questions if there is time. He will be out for two weeks in June for training so I want some choices for him to look at.
I believe if we lived in Washington, we would still pay income tax on the money he makes in Oregon, but other income would be non taxable (dividends, etc).
I really did not think things would move this fast but I am glad they are.

Hey Everyone!!
We are SOOO excited about our Homeschool Co-op; we've done a few "Info Mtgs" and are now just doing small ones.
We are having a small one tomorrow, Monday at 10am. We also will do them for families with Jr High/Highschool on a "request one" type Mtg :)
We do have a few spots for families with children in the younger grades, although we have enough for a nice sized co-op, right now :)
If you'd like more information, check out our website, or just give me an email or phone call.
We also have a Facebook Page for Trivium Cooperative Academy, and would love to have you "like" us..... We really want to serve families in our area.
Thanks!!

I found a few jobs in Ashland and Salem. I am researching which of these would work out for us. How is the cost of living? Best areas to live outside of town (more affordable)? Anything I should know? Our income will be fairly low~$40k at most maybe with no savings and a cross country drive. ;)

Well... Ashland is great for Shakespeare festivals, and Salem is great... cuz we have a great hs group here. I would kinda recommend one over the other... to actually live in... depending on your personality and views. I see Ashland as a much more liberal... "free" spot to live. I know plenty of liberals here, around Salem... but there seems like more of a mix. BUT, even though I live here... that may not be a fair way to view the two places. I did like Ashland to visit, but at least where we visited... it wouldn't be where I raise my family. Good Luck!! :)

Hey there. Saw at the beginning of this thread that there was a hs group out of Aumsville, and I wondered if that was still active and if there were any groups further out the Canyon (Mill City or Gates)? We're new to the area, will probably be here about a year with my husband's job.
Thanks!

From Lane County here!
Absolutely GREAT free homeschool coop here in the Eugene and Springfield area called LaneCH.
Nicest, funniest bunch of ladies with good kids. People are "real" and encouraging. It's member driven. Gets together several times a week for all kinds of things and there are classes.
