I know the movie is coming out (in Feb. I think) and I am entirely unfamiliar with the series. May I get some opinions on your (or your kiddos) experience with the books?

I think they will make an excellent movie. We are extremely disappointed to find out that they are doing one movie for the first 5 books (hope I remembered that correctly). We wanted one book per movie!!!

Can you tell me a little of what they are about and what other series you could compare them with?--
(pretty please :) )

Aside from some of the curde lauguage used, my kiddo's liked em. They are average, fairy- goblin- elf- fantasy books:)

My kids loved the bks... I'm unsure about the movie given the track record of so many awful bk made into movie projects recently. I just may wait for this one to be out on dvd.

My daughter LOVED the books (one of the few series I haven't read yet) and is loving the Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles as well - they refer to the Spiderwick Chronicles as things that have happened, and it's a cute story within story from what I gather. She loves the "encyclopedia of fairy folk" (or something like that) that goes with the books, and actually has written reports on the fairy folk in the books. She can't wait until the movie comes out! I'm sorry I haven't read the books, and can't tell you more about them. They are VERY short, and I do plan to read them before the movie.

....what level are the bks written on?
My dd loves those types of stories and has seen the commercial for the movie. She would be interested in that book.... maybe I'll check the library for it.

They are listed as ages 9-12
Though you may want to check them out first depending on the age of your kiddo's.

The Spiderwick (http://www.spiderwick.com/) site is pretty neat.
Are these considered "mind candy"? Any literary merit for the young reader? I can't stand all the fairy early reader books out there in the bookstores these days. What about crude or bad language?
The illustrations look great and I'm interested. Thanks for the advice.

"should" the books be read in order or doesn't it matter with this series?

One of the main characters in the original series was 9 when my daughter read them (at 9) and one of the characters is 11 now that she is 11... As far as reading level, I'm surprised they are 9-12... I suppose the length is misleading. I just opened one to peek, and 9-12 sounds about right...

My dd, 8, is reading them now. I pre-read them to see if it would be too scary. There are a couple of scary parts but she is handling it fine. Crude language--I must be de-sensitized to this because I don't remember there being anything that stood out to me. You do need to read the books in order.
I don't know if I will let my kids see the movie. Movies always have a tendency to be so much scarier and darker than the book. I might wait to get the DVD and watch it first, rather than see it at the theatre.

We enjoyed this series, which we originally bought because my oldest and the girl in the book share the same name. GRIN. We are really looking forward to the movie!
