My husband and I just finished watching this version of Bleak House

I think I may have read the book nearly two decades ago, but don't remember anything about it.
I found this to be such a fascinating movie! I found it at our library.

Yes, that is a good one! I saw it on PBS last year.

I was drawn in from the first moment; it was thoroughly riveting. The acting was exceptional. I am indebted to my dear friend Kate CA (well known 'round these parts) for telling me about this ~ and gifting it to me just recently on my birthday. What a gem.:)

Love this, too. It's what I watch when I'm alone in the house and have -what? - eight hours or so to kill. (Either this or Pride and Prejudice, mmm!) I have friends who just hate it, though - think it's dreary and depressing. Why AM I friends with these people... we obviously have nothing in common. :001_smile:

Yes, it is wonderful. Gillian Anderson makes a wonderful Lady Dedlock and the man who plays John Jaundyce was so so good.

I can't wait until I have enough extra $$ to purchase it on DVD for myself... :) Now if I can just get the nerve to pick up that large book! LOL I've never read it but the movie (mini-series?) really sucked me in.
We've had that one from Netflix sitting here for at least 2 months if not more. The first 30 minutes are so hard to get into.....and that's all I've seen of it so far.
But I've heard that if I could just get past that.....LOL

My dh and I got this from the library recently...it was soooo good! We'd stay up way too late, watching just one more episode... loved it!

Wow ~ that's a long time! I can't recall how Netflix works exactly; don't you have to return one movie in order to get another?

Interesting! I didn't find that to be the case. I was somewhat taken aback at first by the photographic style; it's definitely different from most BBC fare. Hope you enjoy it sooner or later!:)

I'll check our local Blockbuster and see if they carry it.
Thank you!

You can keep the movies as long as you want, you just can't get another until you return it. Of course this also means I could have purchased Bleak House for less than I've paid Netflix each month I've had it now...LOL. :tongue_smilie:

The Bleak House is wonderful! "Shake me up Judy!"
It does take an episode or so to get into it though, and then you'll want to rewatch it; the 2nd time around is even better.
Two more favorites of mine are:
North & South (Daniela Denby-Ashe, Richard Armitage) This is not the Civil War movie with Patrick Swayze. :tongue_smilie: Aside from Pride & Prejudice, North & South is probably my all time favorite. Such a good movie!!
and...
Our Mutual Friend (Paul McGann, Keeley Hawes). This was wonderful as well! Hubby even watched the entire move with me on a rainy Saturday afternoon. I believe it is also a Dickens; DH really enjoys Dickens's off-beat charactors. :D I think I actually liked this one better than The Bleak House, but both are must-sees in my book. ;)

Ohhh, thanks for the reminder. I keep adding to my list of movies I'd like to watch once we start Netflix. I read the book quite a while ago. Guess I should've watched the movie sooner.

I agree! My husband keeps repeating this line whenever the movie is mentioned. My Dad loved it as well. My mom -- she went to bed. They both admitted they found it hard to get into.

We're in the middle of this right now! I love it, and seeing Gillian Anderson makes me even more excited about the new X-Files movie! Really, though, this is a wonderful mini-series, and it's true that it's just as enjoyable, if not more so, the second time!

Thanks -- I just put it on hold.

And both of these are "watch now" movies on Netflix. Thanks for the recommendations. I'm always happy to find things I can watch whenever I want instead of waiting on a disc!

I rented this on your recommendation. We are in the middle of disk #2 now, and it is excellent!
Thank you :001_smile:
We also are presently enjoying watching Bleak House. Thanks for the recommendation!

You know, it was actually one of those movies where I missed the characters once I was done with it. I'm like that with a really good book too.
