View Full Version : Marathon interview!

DD applied yesterday for a job doing "street art" at a nearby amusement park. I do not remember ever having had an interview that lasted so long - 3.5 hours! - and I wish she had told me up front 2-3 hours.
They interviewed the group of about 15 - q&a format with questions directed to various people in the group. That helped reduce the tension. They did individual portfolio reviews - that portfolio class is *still* paying dividends. Then they took everyone into the park to see people doing the various kinds of art (chalk pastel portraits, charicatures, face painting, etc.) and to practice doing it for each other.
I was surprised to learn that it wasn't just teens applying - she was up against folks who curate museums & work at Nickelodeon and other creative arts folks...only about 1/2 of the applicants were college age.
Anyway, results next week, a month of training, and they pay either minimum wage or commission, whichever is more. DD applied to do portraits, so we'll see how it goes.

Wow! Good luck to your daughter, Laurel. This sounds like it would be a terrific experience for her resume.
And how exciting that she'll be attending art school in the fall. Amazing how these things fall into place.

Laurel,
Best wishes for your daughter in regards to getting the job. (But even an interview like this is a learning experience.)

AND she got the call! Well, they tried to call and the middleschooler was dominating the phone, so dd thought they didn't want her and emailed to ask what she should do to improve her portfolio or interview skills....and they DID want her, they just couldn't get through.
Topped off by passing her driving test (2nd try), it's been a very good day!

Yes, so if you come to Knotts this summer, get your hand painted (she's doing "Hanimals")! Training begins Monday.

OK, the funniest part of all of this is what dd found out today at her paperwork filling-out session. There were 4 callbacks out of 14 applicants, and as I said some of them were professionals not just teens. DD has always struggled with math - she's pulling a B- in consumer math this year. BUT she got the callback because she was one of the 4 who passed the math screening test. What a sweet thing for her...bit of a sad commentary on the applicants.

That is sweet news indeed!
(So, should I confess that I have no idea what "Hanimals" are?)

Neither did I. Apparently you paint the person's hand and make a print on paper, then decorate the print to look like an animal. All this for $15 or $20 or so...and the artist gets a commission.

Ooh, we like this! Thanks for sharing the details. It sounds like a fun summer job for your daughter and a great resume builder to boot.
