My SIL's brother died today. Very sad situation - he was only 40, but had been fighting cancer a while. He had a wife and 3 kids....sad.

Anyway, we did NOT know him personally (met him once, at BIL and SIL's wedding about 5 yrs ago). We are not super close w/ DH's brother and his wife (a.k.a. SIL), but still would like to make a gesture of condolence. I was thinking flowers sent to the funeral home (or church) for the funeral would be appreciated (in the state of AL, to which they will travel for the funeral), but DH thought flowers sent to his brother and SIL at their home (in GA).

Which would you do - flowers to the funeral for the whole family of the departed one, or to the home of the ones we have more connection to - BIL/SIL?

Thanks for your ettiquette input! - Stacey in MA

I would send flowers to your s.i.l. at her house in GA, timed to arrive after she returns from the funeral - you are sending condolences to *her* since you don't know the rest of the family.

Your s.i.l. will appreciate the gesture, and so will your dh's brother.

If there was a memorial fund established anywhere, I would contribute to that. And I would send a condolence card to both families. One short and sweet to SIL's brother's family and a more specific one to SIL.

I would send a plant to their home to arrive when they got home and cards to both.

I would send a plant to your sil's house.

I love the peace lily that I received after my brother died from cancer. I work extra hard at making sure it stays alive. :001_smile:

My brother was also in his forties with three children, and we live in GA; so I felt I had to respond. It's been five years, but I miss him every day.

I'll be praying for your sil and family.

HTH,
Melissa

I think I will do a plant to SIL's house and cards to both - great ideas!
