A Message of Ancient Days - would like to hear more from those who have used this

I am considering using this (along with SOTW, Literature, etc.) with my dd who will be in 5th next year. Does it read like a story or is it very textbooky? Is it easy to outline? Are there questions at the end of sections and are they worthwhile?
