My son hates math. He is bright but does not want to apply himself. Math is the only subject that he has to actually work hard. At this point, he hates school doesn't want to attend college. (14yo) I am still making him prepare for college. What algebra for this kid? I have videotext, but wondering since BCM the only math book he finally gets, should I continue with the series. What is the Lial's sequence for high school? Appreciate any suggestions

We're having success with Lial's Introductory Algebra. Very straightforward and clear.

I'm pretty sure the Lial's Geometry is not recommended. It's just a quick refresher, and I got a chance to look at it (and it was bleh!). We're considering either Jacob's or Chalkdust for Geometry. You might look into Teaching Textbooks for Geometry.

Lial's then has Intermediate Algebra (Alg II), and PreCalculus after that. I think we're leaning in the Chalkdust direction, though. (After I change my mind a couple dozen times over the next year).

If he hates math, I'd be inclined to look into something that gives you teaching helps, like TT, Chalkdust, or Lial's w/dvts. From a purely selfish point of view! :) Less time to hear the grumbling, and it puts more on him, less stress on you. Although you would want to be there to review and make sure he gets it.
