Which is better for highschool student to learn: Word or Excel ??

Hi,
If you had a highschool student that was going to take one computer course for a highschool summer course would you have them take Word or Excel. As far as her interest, she does alot of internet website stuff etc. Not for sure if either would help there. But, the summer program offers either of those two.
I know a little about Word but nothing about Excel.

Excel. Word is pretty easy to "get" or get a book to self-teach, but Excel has so many possibilities, and can do many of the same functions that Word uses, but Word cannot do much that Excel can.

My husband is an Excel wizard (he's an accountant) and uses lots of banking software based on its model. He continues to be patient to try and teach me, but I always have to ask for his help. (or maybe I just keep asking because he smells so good when he sits close to me.....ah, I digress).

My oldest daughter took a year long computer course (through Florida Virtual School) that covered both quite well and she thought she knew a lot to begin with, but she learned tons.
