What are those pieces of paper in the second column?

They are next to the envelopes in the first column, and sometimes there is a smiley face or a question mark, or some other icon. What are they for?

When you post a message you can select a "post icon", they are below the window you type your response in. The person who originally makes the post gets their icon on the listing of posts, but anyone can add one to their post. I think the sheet of paper is a default icon, you can choose no icon as well.
