Reading the thread about all the talent searches and standardized testing got me thinking about whether anyone else here is in Canada, and what you may have done in those areas.

I know we can't take advantage of Davidson Young Gifted, not being in the U.S., and I sent a note recently to Duke to see what their position was (they say they service the 16 states surrounding them, but I wonder if that might stretch to "provinces"). I haven't heard back from them.

I think we can test into JHU's program, but haven't done so yet. As for standardized testing, I'm really not sure what we should do, if anything. There's the CAT-3 (Canadian Achievement Test), but what benefit does writing that confer?

Any other Canucks who've been down this path?

One idea to try is NUMATS/ CTD out of Northwestern University in Chicago. We've used them out-of-region and they didn't seem to care much.... And if we do end up moving to Ontario, I plan to continue with them, just because they'll be reasonably close.

Other than that, I know the math possibilities better than anything else -- University of Waterloo has math exams that apparently carry quite a bit of weight (and scholarship money for high schoolers!), and you can do the AMC tests, although there is a separate route if you're interested in the Canadian Math Olympiad (AMC tests are used in the US to lead to the USAMO)... I think the CMO comes out of the UW tests in some way, but I've not looked too deeply into that yet.

You can take the SAT and ACT exams without a talent search. If you don't think you'd use the camps or distance ed opportunities, you might just take the exams indepedently. I'd be very surprised if it were any more difficult there than here... but I've never tried it outside of the US myself, so I can't speak from experience. The younger grades (Explore test, or SCAT) might require a talent search registration.

Hope this helps!

I don't have any answers, unfortunately, but if you discover anything be sure to let us know! I'm also in Ontario and wondering what's out there. :)
