My youngest has a terrible time with wipes and diaper rash. Yes, we use the Pampers/Huggies/Whatever unscented/natural/sensitive..blah, blah, blah wipes. They are rough on him.

Is there some brand/product out there that I haven't tried yet? In case you should ask, yes, we change him frequently. Yes, we sometimes let him run around with a diaper. The ped said he is just that sensitive type.

Do you mean run around with OUT a diaper?
There was a thread on here - reusable wipes. Soft flannel pieces that you just use water with....or I suppose you could make your own solution if you wanted to.

I was told to use 100% cotton wool and water in hospital. I never stopped simply using that.
Before you put the diaper back on him use a pure protective cream such as lanisoh (100% lanolin).
Yes, if at all possible give him long breaks without a diaper each time you change him.
I hope he gets well soon!

My oldest used to get horrible diaper rash. When it got bad, I used a soft baby washcloth and warm water.

My middle and youngest had a horrible time with this. We finally settled on Huggies wipes with shea butter - they are super soft and no irritation for them. About the only ointment they could tolerate and that ever seemed to help irritation and rash was Burt's Bees diaper ointment. It also works well on eczema, pimples and an eye treatment at night for mom :)

Do you have some baby washcloths? Try those with just water. Or maybe water with some tea tree oil in it. The tea tree oil will kill yeast and bacteria (not saying that's what it is, just that it could be).

Diaper rash cream - I agree with the PP who said to try Lansinoh. I also used to make up a concoction for when it was REALLY bad - Lansinoh, triple antibiotic ointment, yeast cream, and cortizone. That took care of it every time! (But I only used it when it was terrible, awful - like nearly bleeding - because of the cortizone.)

This is pretty much what we used. We had some plain washcloths (from Ikea) that we moistened with plain water and stored in a plastic bin. For a while we added a little bit of unscented almond oil to the water. We have friends who use a spray bottle to wet the cloths as they use them.

Another thing to consider is how much liquid the baby is getting. The urine can be much stronger and more irritating if the baby isn't drinking very much. Our dd nursed (constantly, it seemed), but once she was taking solid food, we gave her cups of water to drink as well.

Dd rarely got rashes, but when she did, we let her get some fresh air on the area, and it cleared right up. Good luck!

As others have said, I used reusable cloths (either inexpensive cotton washcloths or small pieces of flannel serged). I would put a few in a ziploc freezer bag with a little water, a tiny bit of baby friendly soap (I think I used one of the California Baby products way back when) and a little olive oil.

The other secret though is to gently pat baby's bottom dry after wiping and smear a few drops of olive oil on before reapplying the diaper. It provides a bit of a seal to protect the skin between diaper changes.

My first had a super sensitive bottom to the point that it would bleed. We used wash cloths at first. Then when it got a little better I started making my own wipes, paper towel cut in half, small amount of J&J body wash and baby oil. I have used that for all of my boys and it has worked out well.

You just need a drop of soap in a whole pile of washcloths, with around a cup of water? I can't remember where I got the washcloths, but they are super soft. Perhaps MotherEase?

And I put them in a wipes warmer. Do they still make those things? Kind of a necessity come wintertime if you use this method.

We also used paper wipes when we were out on the road, but never had as much success as with the washcloths.

My oldest had diaper rash troubles with all wipes. She ended up in the hospital for something else at 6 weeks and they cleared it up in 2 days. I asked how and they said they used only cotton squares & baby oil. (Don't even wet the cotton squares, just squirt some baby oil on them.)

Besides it is actually cheaper than wipes, so you save money as well.

That sounds so odd to me that I might try it.:001_unsure:

The shea wipes from Huggies and the Burts Bees (just because it smells so good). It works better than some but the problem is still quite a problem.

I never had a problem with the first two but my youngest has the most sensitive skin. He sleeps well and if he poops at night he will have a bleeding rash by morning. He never wakes up when he poops. TMI

anyway, I use pampers and pampers sensitive wipes. When he gets a rash though, I can't even use cream because it stings so badly. Everything I have used sends him screaming. I have recently taken to using just vaseline on his bottom. Everytime he is changed. It seems to help prevent and at least is something I can put on during the rash.

As a matter of fact, I have the prescription yeast stuff, the triple antibiotic stuff, prescription cortizone and...whatever else. I don't have the lansinoh but will look into it.

The tea tree oil..are you sure about that??? :001_unsure: That stuff is pretty potent and I just cannot imagine putting that on his bottom when it is so angry red with broken skin. Yes, it does get that bad, frequently.

which was nearly everybody :), I can't :ack2: . Well, I'll say I would rather try every single other option first before I do reusable. I have a low tolerance for icky stuff. :blushing:

Oh man!!!! I guess I should've clarified a bit better!!!! Ack! Use a bit of tea tree oil in the water (like one or two drops!) that you use if you try the washcloths. No!! Not on his poor bare bum!!! Ouch!

I cut up a few old t-shirts I had lying around, and use them and plain water on my daughter. If they are somehow all in the laundry, I use cotton wool. Much cheaper! The best thing I've found for nappy rash (which thankfully my dd rarely gets) is paw paw ointment. I buy it from the health food shop.
