This isn't a curriculum so it's probably not what you want but Free Rice (http://www.freerice.com) is really fun.

This sounds like Calvert's Spelling cds. They're about $25 per level. In 4th, the spelling was too easy for dd, but the vocabulary was just right. This can be done independently on the computer.

I really like Worldly Wise by Kenneth Hodkinson and Sandra Adams, published by Educator's Publishing Service.

The lessons are very in depth and the child can do them by himself.

I haven't used them yet, but I was thinking about it for my 5th grader. Right now...I pull words from SWO that they don't know and have them look them up, write sentences for each (or copy sentences if I can find good ones using those words). That's vocab.! We used Wordly Wise for 2 years and it was an independent program that my dc could do on their own, but I often wondered if it was just busywork.

Vocabulary Vines.

I am using with my 4th grader. I probably should have started this in 5th or 6th grade instead. I will tell you that it is labor intensive on the child's part. My son writes down the Latin or Greek root on an index card. Then, he has a few words with the root. He has to figure out the definition base upon the root or go to Webster's dictionary and write it down. It is easy for me because I don't have to do anything. He does all the work. I think as he works through this if I should have waited until 5th or even 6th grade to start this program.

You will love the program because you don't have to do the work. He even comes up with the games we play using the roots. His favorite is making up your own words.

Blessings,
Karen

Word Roots A1 CD (Critical Thinking Press)

Would you please let us know more about this program? It sounds interesting and I would like to hear from someone who actually uses it.

Thanks!

You can download a demo.

I haven't started using this yet because I just bought it. We did some Rummy Roots a few years back and I can see how that has helped my students. Some of Word Roots will be review for them since we do MegaWords (which has a vocabulary component also). They are fairly motivated to do some subjects on the computer, so I thought I'd try this with them.
