I was going to title the thread Moon Unit but then I'd have to put a Zappa in there and that would be dating myself, fer sure.

Anyway, we have a beautiful full moon tonight and the girls were asking all kinds of questions about the moon-that I couldn't answer. :(

Any suggestions for learning about the moon? Books, DVD's, websites, prepared unit studies I could download? My girls are 8, 7, and 5.

Thanks!
Jennifer

We used a free lapbook from Hands of a Child.
We adapted it and it came out pretty nice.

Draw the moon every night for a month (when you can--ok if a day or two gets skipped). Try to include location in the sky as well as shape. Also note the time that you observed it.
That doesn't cover the unit study, but just one more thing you can add to it.

Here's a link for things to go with the book Owl Moon, so a lot of it is about owls, BUT there are a few things about the moon there too that might be helpful. (notebooking pages and a couple of outside links)

We just studied the moon in the science co-op I teach. I made up a one page moon phases lapbook. I had the kids draw an earth in the middle of the page, then we made mini matchbooks and drew the moon phase on the front of each match book. Then they wrote about each moon phase inside the flap. They pasted the phases around the earth in order. They really learned alot from this project and it looks neat in their Astronomy Notebook. I can send a picture if you want.

Schlessinger has an All About the Moon video my kids have been enjoying. We're going to row Owl Moon next week, so this has been a go-along for that. Bill Nye also has a Moon show that they enjoyed.

It shows an animation of the phases of the moon and it is pretty cool.
