...about the importance of problem-solving in the math curriculum and resources & programs available for math-gifted students has been posted online here (http://mathprize.atfoundation.org/archive/2009/rusczyk).

I had the great pleasure of being in the audience for this talk last November, and I thought that some of you might find it interesting and helpful, too. The slides for the talk are also online here (http://mathprize.atfoundation.org/archive/2009/index).

Enjoy! :001_smile:

Thanks for linking us to this. I listened to it while I did some paperwork this morning. I love that he says the most important things for elementary school-aged kids to be doing in order to become good problem-solvers as adults are to read and to play.

Yes, I LOVED this...it was one thing that stood out to me, too, in a very positive way when I was listening!

I was finally able to view this in its entirety. It was so refreshing to hear someone speak about students in a manner that resonates with me. The tyranny of 100% and perfectionism of high ability students is so true.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but those of you who hadn't found the time to watch the video of this lecture might be interested in reading the transcript (http://mathprize.atfoundation.org/archive/2009/Rusczyk_Problem_Solving_Presentation_at_Math_Prize _for_Girls_2009.pdf) that is now available. Many of you will appreciate Rusczyk's perspective and advice.

You must have been thinking of me, right? :tongue_smilie:

Thank you, I watched the first three minutes three times. It's easier for me to read than to watch anything.

:iagree::iagree::iagree: And apparently, RR agrees too:

As I was staying last night with a very good friend of mine, he was pointing out that reading is probably the highest bandwidth way to get information into your brain. Right? You’re sitting there on the internet clicking around, and somebody says “you’ve got to check this out.” You click on it, and it’s a video. What do you do? You close the browser. Because if it’s an article, you can skim that. You can go through and pull out the information really quickly. For a video, you’ve got to sit there for five minutes. Unless it’s funny or clever, you think, “Forget about it. I’ll go read something if I want to learn.”

I'm halfway through the lecture now. Thanks for sharing this!

THanks so much and lol about the transcript. I watched a bit and was so glad I could read it. (He 'gets' me.)

What a great link -- thanks for posting it. I think I may need to print out that slide with the DOE quote and post it up somewhere for those days I lose heart.

As I was reading the transcript, I could hear him in my head totally!

I too would love to hear him in person. That'd be awesome. We need to convince AoPS to go to some big homeschool conventions. :tongue_smilie:

I particularly like the part in which he describes being overwhelmed, at first, by the problems at the Olympiad summer program. I like it too much, probably, but it's such an excellent example of perseverance. Whenever the kid expresses frustration with a problem, I'll start in with, "Remember, Professor Rusczyk..." and he'll finish with, "Couldn't solve the problems his first summer at MOP."

Well, I thought it encouraging! :)

Wow, I wish Mr Rusczyk had been my maths teacher! He is certainly helping me to be a better math teacher for my children.

Thanks for posting!
