View Full Version : Is it okay to give positive reputation in place of "Thank you" within a thread?

Sometimes I think that saying "thank you" for help, without any further information, really clutters up a thread. I've started giving reputation instead. Is this okay?

I leave rep points for these things far more than I leave "thank yous" on the thread. I also run out of rep points too soon, though.

I've started doing this, as well. If I have something further to say, then I'll post that information and include my thank you in that post, and then I'll give rep points in addition to it. But if I don't have anything else to contribute to the conversation, I just tell them thank you when I give them rep points.

If I don't have any other relevant information that might be helpful to other people reading the post, I just like to give rep. points and say my thank you in the comment section. If I've run out of rep. to share or I have repped a person too recently, I send a pm. :001_smile: I also find it helpful when people pm or rep me with thanks because I sometimes don't go back and check on every thread to which I have contributed.

I do it. As others have said, if I have nothing more to add, just appreciated that person's post...I rep 'em with a simple "Thanks" :)

Yes, definitely! That falls under the category of a helpful post, doesn't it?

I'm starting to do this instead of posting "i agree" posts so much, and ought to start doing more thank you's this way, too as I mean to give out more positive rep than I do, but am evidently learning this slowly.

I do it all the time.

It would be nice if we could purchase more rep somewhere!!! I always run short.

I hope so, as I've been doing that, too,

I often do this too. I think it's one of the nice things about the rep system. Kind of liking giving someone a tip for great service!:001_smile:

I've been doing this, but I usually run out of rep points. In that case, I send a PM "thank you."

Personally, I would prefer the thank you. I am not into collecting rep points.

The *one* thing I will say that is in the against camp is that when you say thank-you in the thread for a well-written, helpful post then your post bumps the thread up for others to see. That's the one thing I like about the thank-yous in the threads. It keeps helpful threads where I am more likely to see them.

I don't do it to give people "points", per se, but as a private way to say thank you or otherwise give them a private, positive message,

True. Sometimes I do both.
