I put my DD through a leveled reading test today and she did GREAT! It says she is reading at the same level as a child in the 7th month of 6th grade, yay! BUT ...

When she came to an unknown word she had trouble dividing it into syllables and sounding it out. She doesn't like to sound words out so when she couldn't read them she guessed at parts of the words. Mostly those words were ones she had never heard of, or tried to read before.

We have previously worked with Websters and she has no trouble reading the words when they are already divided into syllables.

Would Megawords or another similar program be suitable to work at reading larger words and increasing her vocabulary? What else can you recommend besides just reading, she does plenty of that already ;) it is her passion!

REWARDS (by Sopris West) is a great program that explicitly teaches how to sound out multisyllabic words. I used it my advanced reader when he was 6 and he loved it.

Can't find any samples of REWARDS, any other suggestions? or perhaps a link.

Here's a link for a sample lesson in REWARDS Intermediate (which is what I would recommend for a 5yo, regardless of reading level):

We are going to use it soon. Thanks for the recommendation. I had not heard of it before.
