I have lots of great books to supplement this, but no real spine about the war. I have Abraham Lincoln's World, bios of Grant and Lee, a providential book about the run up to the Civil War (normally I don't want that approach, but DD is 11 now and we are discussing it as we go along. Plus it's just a really good book.), and lots of accompanying novels such as "Amos Fortune, Free Man", "Across 5 Aprils", "Red Badge of Courage", etc.

I just need a really, really good outline of the war period itself.

TIA!

What about The Civil War for Kids? It is for ages 9 - 12. Chapters alternate between a timeline of the war itself (with lots of battle coverage) and sort of "life in the times." We really liked it.

my ds really enjoyed Rifles for Watie and Behind Rebel Lines as historical fiction for that time period. He really didn't care much for Across Five Aprils. Of course, YMMV :)

I think it is volume 6 that is all the civil war. Very nice, IMHO.

I was just think "The Civil War for Kids" would be good.:)

I haven't read these myself, but I've read a lot of Albert Marrin books and I liked all of them.
