My 3 teenagers (9th, 10th and 12th grades next year) may have the opportunity to join a one-day co-op next year, and this is the text that will be used for the science, but in their catalog it's touted as for 8th grade. Only my 9th grader is science oriented (the other 2 are girls, with 2yr degree aspirations).

and, if you've ever been in a one day co-op, do you know if there is nothing during one particular time slot that you want your kids to do (like if I decide to go with my original plan for science for them for next year) would they have the option of a study hall? I know you can't answer specifically, but typically? or in your experience? we've not been part of any co-ops since they were little.

thanks,
jodi

I am using this text with my 9th grade daughter this year. It is very challenging. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it without the DVDs unless someone who is science-oriented is teaching the class.

This year my daughter is also attending a one-day-a-week coop for one class. There are study halls offered for those children who are attend all day. That being said, it has been a challenge for the Board to make the study halls TRUE study halls. I know that they have banned laptops and had problems in the past with disruptive behavior. This year there are paid staff working in the study halls (i.e. no more "once a month" or "one time a year" volunteers). It is a work in progress as the coop grows.

So - I think that the Bob Jones text would be perfectly fine for a physical or earth science credit. And I would definitely talk to those who are running the coop about their policies.

Hey Jodi,

In our co-op, we allow the older students, who can self-govern, to opt out of a class and do study hall. We were a very small co-op this year, so there was no supervising parent, but only 2 kids opted out of classes and at different times and they were perfectly capable of self-study.

Hope it works out for you all. A well-fit co-op can really add to what we do at home!
