Just thinking a bit ahead and wondering how this will work out.

I have a 4th and 1st grader. We are currently nearing the final chapters of SOTW3 with plans to go into SOTW4 next.

That puts my now 4th and 1st grader hitting Ancients again in 3rd and 6th.

What kind of schedule (loosely of course) do you aim for with regards to this when you kind of get a bit behind with things?

Oh, and at what point is it necessary/beneficial to separate them with regards to that subject?

thanks!

I don't worry if their off by a year or two, we just keep going with one era per year, whatever the grade level so for us this will be (starting next year):

Ancient: 8th, 6th, 5th, 3rd, 1st, 1st
Middle ages: 9th, 7th, 6th, 4th, 2nd, 2nd
Early Modern: 10th, 8th, 7th, 5th, 3rd, 3rd, 1st
Late Modern: 11th, 9th, 8th, 6th, 4th, 4th, 2nd
Ancient: 12th, 10th, 9th, 7th, 5th, 5th, 3rd, 1st
Middle Ages: 11th, 10th, 8th, 6th, 6th, 4th, 2nd
Early Modern: 12th, 11th, 9th, 7th, 7th, 5th, 3rd, 1st, 1st
Late Modern: 12th, 10th, 8th, 8th, 6th, 4th, 2nd, 2nd
Ancient: 11th, 9th, 9th, 7th, 5th, 3rd, 3rd
Middle Ages: 12th, 10th, 10th, 8th, 6th, 4th, 4th
Early Modern: 11th, 11th, 9th, 7th, 5th, 5th
Late Modern: 12th, 12th, 10th, 8th, 6th, 6th
Ancient: 11th, 9th, 7th, 7th
Middle Ages: 12th, 10th, 8th, 8th
Early Modern: 11th, 9th, 9th
Late Modern: 12th, 10th, 10th
Ancient: 11th, 11th
Middle Ages: 12th, 12th

Well, that was probably way more than you wanted but my point is that they'll study each year at some point and it doesn't really matter if that time corresponds with their age.

I think your blog title says it all:)

I wouldn't worry about it - you're likely to get off 20 times over before they graduate (ask me how I know). My dd is almost "done" with the medieval year of (10th grade) high school, and we *never* get to all the great books we'd like. But you know what? She's read so many books that I never read till I read them with her (at nearly 50 yo, wink). Your students will still have a richer education than they could have gotten elsewhere.

Some ideas though....you could pick and choose to catch up over the next few years, or you could read some during the summer.

My kids will all be 'off' the cycles.

Here is us, beginning this fall:

Ancients: 8th, 7th, 4th, 2nd
Middle Ages: 9th, 8th, 5th, 3rd, K
Early Modern: 10th, 9th, 6th, 4th, 1st
Late Modern: 11th, 10th, 7th, 5th, 2nd

However, I really wanted my 2 oldest to get 2 complete cycles in so I am *contemplating* doing this:

Ancients/Middle Ages: 8th, 7th, 4th, 2nd
Early/Late Modern: 9th, 8th, 5th, 3rd, K
Ancients/Middle Ages: 10th, 9th, 6th, 4th, 1st
Early/Late Modern: 11th, 10th, 7th, 5th, 2nd

The 1 year of American History with Govt for the benefit of my older 2:
12th, 11th, 8th, 6th, 3rd

then back to Ancients on regular 4 year rotation:
Ancients: 12th, 9th, 7th, 4th
Middle Ages: 10th, 8th, 5th
Early Modern: 11th, 9th, 6th
Late Modern: 12th, 10th, 7th

and on....

Thanks. I was at the point of wondering what it would look like and how I might think about our goals, very loosely of course. I am not wedded to a particular schedule but was wondering at what point to make sure that certain paths are covered and if there were any time frame issues that might play in to that. Just pondering the future a bit and wondering, you know?

Thanks for the layouts, I appreciate that. I am not a super duper plan it all out person, but I do want to have a general path/plan/pattern that I am sort of intending to aim for. How's that for nonspecific!

Ok, I know what I was aiming for here (I am super slow in the brain activity connections etc today).

Since I am off a bit, if would look like my oldest would hit Modern ages twice in the rotation. Is it better to hit that one 3 times or to think about that rather than not? (still not terribly clear, am I -- GAH I feel like my head is Jello today!)

So, at this point it looks like we'll end up with:
- 6 years history (ancients to moderns)
- 1 year world cultures/geography/comparative religions
- 4 years history (high school), *probably* ancients to moderns

If we continue to homeschool through high school graduation, the above will cover the older son's 11 years schooling at home. That will leave the younger son with his senior year (his 12th year of homeschooling) free to "fill in the cracks" as needed. Seems to be working fine to have spread the history to just two cycles, giving us time for bunny trails, plus a whole year for a different focus. Warm regards, Lori D.

Cool! that's a good idea too! I was just trying to think outside of the box and was not seeing it all that well. I like this idea a lot. thanks!

Forgot to mention: this is year 8 for us, so we've completed 6 years history, the 1 year of world geog., and are now in year 1 (ancients) of the high school cycle. : )

I'm in my 5th year, 2nd time round with Ancients, with both ds12 and dd13. I really enjoy the 4 year history cycle but I am not sure when it will end....I find as the years go on it gets a bit more unpredictable whether either child will finish their highschool years under my tutelage, or do any number of other things. A friend's daughter decided to go to highschool this year. These things happen.
So to me it was important to cover Asian religions this year, so we have. And it is time to add in some more geography, so I do.
I don't plan too far ahead apart from making sure I cover what I really want to cover, while they are still close and under my wing and I can make them read things I want them to read.
I love keeping mine together for history. I dont see any reason to separate them just because they are getting older. We can watch the same movies, and have the same read alouds. It just seems more efficient.
