If you're talking about GWG 1/2 and FLL 1/2, GWG is work bookish and doesn't cover poems, copywork, etc. Though GWG is in a workbook format, it is still very gentle.
Both of them are scheduled to do 3 times a week.
Both are in the narrative style of instruction. But FLL is more teacher says this... and student responds with this...
It just really depends on your teaching style, and most importantly your child's learning style on which curr. you would want to use.
They have samples of GWG HERE (http://www.growingwithgrammar.com). Not sure where you can see samples of FLL. Maybe at Peace Hill Press.

FLL is very scripted and has a bunch of review and repetition. My ds found that extremely monotonous. As previously stated, it is mostly done orally except for copywork/dictation. GWG is fill-in-the-blank. I don't know about level 1/2 of GWG, but in level 4, there isn't not half as much of the review and repetition of topics. FLL 1/2 spent more than 20 lessons just on nouns. By lesson 5, even *I* was yawning and rolling my eyes! We just had to stop. I do, however, pull it out now and again for the copywork exercises and narration exercises. Both are very different programs. It all depends on what you want. GWG - just grammar, no writing, narration or copywork/dictation exercises, etc. FLL - grammar, writing/copywork, narration exercises, dictation. Both good programs, just depends on your "style".
