My 5yo who has a mild speech delay has just started to stutter also about a week ago. He never did that before. Now he really struggles to get the words out (at the start) and sometimes gets very frustrated and says "I can't say it" . It seems like the word just doesn't come out !
His speech delay is very mild and he never struggled with stuttering .

While I haven't had my youngest ds tested (if there is a speech delay test?) he is definitely behind where most children his age are and he does sometimes stutter. The difference, though, is that he doesn't get frustrated, so I don't see it as a huge problem. I do sometimes have him repeat what he said without stuttering. So, if he stutters the first time he says it, after he has gotten it all out, I ask him to say it again and he is able to do so without stuttering.

My nephew was speech delayed, and then started stuttering. It started slowly, built up in frequency, leveled off for a while, and gradually faded away. He did have a therapist come in for about a year, but that was more for the delay and articulation issues than for the stuttering. I know that stuttering can be a temporary thing. My brother has stuttered since the age of three, but there was no speech delay involved. I don't know that the two are always related, but stuttering can be temporary. We thought ds was beginning to stutter for a while, but it was more of a tic/ocd type thing.
