Need good book for north american explorers

I'm working on getting my wish list together for next school year. We will be covering N. AMer explorers before going into the new colonies/colonial times. I have been looking for one good book to purchase. DD will be reading on a near 3rd grade level. I will probably do this as a read aloud but she will be 6 so I don't want it to be too lengthy.

Any one have a recommendation?
