Chang for AP chemistry?

Both of the local universities appear to be using "Chemistry" by Chang for their first year chemistry course. It would be easy for me to pick up a 2nd hand copy. Does anyone have any experience with using this for a do-it-yourself AP course? Any thoughts on whether it's important to use the latest version? I have a copy out from the library (edition 7) and think it's readable but not visually very grabbing.

A long time ago, I worked for McGraw-Hill's college division, and Chang was one of the best-selling books from Random House which we had bought in the 1980's. I remember meeting the author-- an articulate, thoughtful gentleman. I don't know how popular the book is now, but I imagine it is still successful.

We used Chang as a supplement to Singapore since Singapore has so much more on industrial chem and is "lite" in a few other areas. It's a big book but we found it readable and complete. As Anne might attest too, college books just keep growing and publishers just add in more and more "pedagogy". Sometimes it's good, sometimes not. Btw, PA Homeschoolers uses/used this book for their AP Chem course. Chances are the older editions are sufficient.
