Hi folks,

Okay, so initially we set out to wait till our older dd was 7 or so before getting her a much-anticipated American Girl doll. But after a steady 6 months of hoping for one for Christmas with no mention of anything else on her part, we went ahead and gave her Kit this past Christmas. She was 5.5. She's done a wonderful job caring for Kit and plays with her daily. Kit is truly a friend doll to her. I'm very pleased with our decision. Now younger dd has also been interested in having a doll for the same length of time, but she's not-yet 4 (birthday in May). She knows it's unlikely she'll have one before she's 5 at the earliest. BUT, she also plays with Kit daily and loves her very much, I've been surprised at how much she enjoys dressing the doll, brushing her hair, "reading" to her, etc. Neither girl has ever been particularly into baby dolls, despite having a couple each. But they both adore Kit. Dd's birthday is around the corner, her doll choice would be Emily, who also has shorter, straight hair, which is more manageable for them to brush and fix. I'm really sort of tempted to give a doll to younger dd also. I think they would enjoy playing with the two dolls so very much together. I know that AG recommends older ages for the dolls, but my girls are in their "doll-playing" years in a serious way and I want them to get the most enjoyment out of the dolls that they can.

Thoughts?? Bitty Baby just wouldn't be as loved here, I don't think. Even though she's for a younger age. And we *have* babies that are plenty cute. But they're not "friends" like Kit has become.

It sounds like you already know the answer to your question. DD#2 has proven that she can play with the doll without ruining it. If you want her to have the doll, buy it!

Well I'm not sure dh will go for it yet, it's a bit more than we usually spend on a birthday gift. I'm building my case. ;) But yeah, I'm leaning that way. Unless someone tells me it's a bad idea for some reason I've not thought of.

DDs got their first AG dolls in kindergarten, and have built a small collection since then.. Honestly, not all the dolls are in great condition, but they're *so* loved! They're definitely more fun to play when AG dolls have 'friends', too :D
