The boy is hard on pencils! He likes a sharp point and will sharpen them until there's nothing left.

Have you considered getting him some mechanical pencils? That would solve the sharpening problem anyway!

My kids break the lead in mechanical ones right and left.
The best pencil made, imho, are Ticondaroga!!!

For those that bear down hard, we get .9 mm mechanical pencils here. But, if you want real pencils, I would say Ticondaroga are the only way to go. I also just bought a bunch of packs of Mirado Black Warriors at our brand new Walmart. These are awesome!!

Without a doubt, Mirado Black Warriors. Absolutely awesome. One has to take them outside on the lawn and jump on them to break them.

My ds 8 is driving me CRAZY with the sharpening of pencils. He is OBSESSED with a sharp point. I will have to get those pencils! Papermates suck.......
We tried the mechanical pencil today. He still breaks them. (My husband has a thing about a sharp point too. I think it is an engineering thing!)

You know... DS used to break pencil leads right and left and I actually went with a thinner lead rather than a thicker one. It took him a little while (maybe a month) but he stopped pushing so hard. And when he stopped pushing so hard, he wrote better and had much less fatigue. So all in all not a bad thing ;)

But that wasn't actually in the OP's question -- if it's just a matter of wanting it sharp, I'd go with mechanical. If they can't stop breaking a mechanical pencil lead, then one of the other suggestions... but if pressing hard is becoming an issue, it might be worth a few packs of pencil leads to break them of the habit (get it? break? LOL)

second the Black Warrior or Dixon Ticonderoga, I'm very particular about the eraser too.

We love the Black Warriors but they are soft and need to be sharpened often. The Ticonderogas are good if they aren't a defective batch where the lead falls out all the time. Those are the best.
