Hi everyone.

I'm totally new to the High School board, so I'll probably be asking questions that you've all read (and answered) a thousand times already - sorry!!! :tongue_smilie:

So here goes with question number one. I have started reading bits of the rhetoric stage section of WTM and today I looked at 9th grade Ancient History. The recommendation is to use SWB's History of the Ancient World which looks really good. I have also come across Guerber's/Miller's Story of the Ancient World.

Has anyone used either or both of these books with this age group? Any comparisons/contrasts? Which do you think is more beneficial?

I would appreciate any comments...:)

After a sorry attempt to use Spielvogel's Western Civizilation, we switched to Susan's book and it is going great! I love the way it is written. It is a wonderful resource, and helps to put things in perspective. It also provides the detail and the "living books" quality that is sorely lacking in many textbooks.

Susan's book is the best.

More fans of SWB's A History of the Ancient World. My eldest is doing it now, and I'm reading it along with her so I can grade papers & ask questions.

My oldest will be doing this next year. We have the Spielvogel and Susan's book.

The Grueber/Miller books (http://www.lamppostpublishing.com/guerber-history.htm) are written for first graders. There is no way they would be rigorous enough or contain enough information to count for a high school credit.

They are recommended as a "child’s first introduction to history in grades 2-6." It is a good series for reading aloud to the children. In addition, there are recommended reading suggestions keyed to the chapters. These suggested readings (often at the child's reading level) provide additional detail and exploration of topics from the narrative.

Thank you. I didn't realize the Guerber/Miller books were for younger readers. The info I had read didn't indicate this, so I'm glad you pointed it out :) .

It sounds like Susan's book is a winner :hurray:
Thanks, everyone.
