We're planning on moving to Seattle at the end of the summer. I'm starting to recover from the sticker shock for housing, but I'm still trying to figure out a good neighborhood to live in.

Here's what I'd like in a place to rent:
-Quiet
-Not too expensive since we'd like to keep the rent under $1800
-Within walking distance (less than a mile) of at least two of the following- University of Washington, library, an LDS church building, taekwondo studio, farmer's market or grocery store

Does anyone have any suggestions? And what else do I need to know about Seattle? It looks like a great place to live.

Thanks in advance!

Check out the Wallingford neighborhood - close to UW (and probably at least one or two of the other requirements). Prices here are high in general though!

The only thing I didn't like about Seattle was the traffic. Specifically the freeways & congestion. Try to have a passenger with you and "know thy rush hours". I consulted dh as he lived there for many years he says "This is a trick question." What do you like to do? Seattle is a great city.

Try mapquest and search for businesses (LDS, TKD, libraries) in areas you are looking at. We moved out in '01 so I have no recent reliable info on where a good place to be is. Good luck.

I was hoping this wouldn't be a trick question. But I was afraid it would be.

We will check Wallingford though. Thanks!

Someone here clued me in to the forums on city-data.com. They have a separate forum for each state in the U.S., and there is even a subforum just on the Seattle area.

You can often get quite detailed information about neighborhoods.

If you were willing to go further out, Renton might have some neighborhoods that meet your requirements. The Renton Library is fairly close to the Renton Farmer's Market, a Safeway, and a Fred Meyer. The Farmer's Market is also close to the transit center, too, so busing into Seattle wouldn't be too hard. Also, the prices might be a fair bit better there.

I'm out further still...sorry I can't help you more!

Well... I'll tell you from what I've seen, one mile from UW and Quiet aren't going to mix well... ;)

Every city/neighborhood has it's own feel. You might have to do some driving around to see what suits your personality. There's a very wide range.
