What do you all use for vocabulary study in the high school years. I'm thinking of something along the lines of getting ready for the SAT. Dd will start ninth grade in the fall.

I think getting ready for the SAT is good! DD is doing Vocabulary from Classical Roots A & B this year (8th) and will do VfCR C & D next year in 9th. Then we'll probably go to other things.

Word Wealth (http://www.amazon.com/Word-Wealth-Ward-S-Miller/dp/003041931X) is a textbook that my dd will be using next year when she attends a vocabulary class. She took a free writing class this year from a retired English teacher. He will be offering vocab next year. I do not know how he plans to use it, but he is an excellent teacher. I would expect him to pick something very worthwhile.
Roots and Fruits (http://www.christianbook.com/roots-and-fruits-comprehensive-vocabulary-curriculum/jill-dixon/pd/477200) is a book that I have, but it is the thing we never get to. It is a list of English forms of Greek and Latin roots and prefixes, with suggested vocabulary words. Many of them are supposed to be SAT. Lesson plans for how to use the lists are included. I do like it and plan to use it more after that class.

I used Vocab from Classical Roots with my older son, but I'm getting ready to use Vocab for the College Bound with my younger son, beginning next year.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm off to research those you've mentioned.

We did the background study with Vocab from Classical Roots...then 500 Key Words for the SAT: and How to Remember Them Forever....Now, the most real way seems for him to study the vocab from the Progeny Press Guides for whatever literature we are studying..
So we separate the vocab from the lit analysis...he does the vocab at his own pace.
The 500 Key Words is funny but they are not the most difficult SAT words. Still it gave him an enjoyable reprieve, though he does like doing the PP words as they are then in the book he is reading, so there is a context.

With my oldest I had planned to tie vocab to the lit that he was reading. It didn't get done consistently. (It was just one more thing in a SEA of things that required my attention.) He just took the SAT for the first time on Saturday; I wish that we had done more roots study.
Dd and younger ds are consistently working through the VCR workbook series. Easy-peasy! Dd won't finish the series until her jr. year, so we may skip the last book and spread book D out over the year and do some lit-connected vocab. Younger ds started the series this year in 7th grade; he will finish at the end of 9th grade. The series handles the roots well. It's easy to pace the book, so the work gets done with Mom face-time only twice a week for a couple of minutes! And word-awareness is something that we chat about now - it just comes up because we are doing the workbook. (I'll hear a word while we're listening to a book on tape while driving. Pause. Remember?) :001_smile:
He should have NO trouble with the SAT vocab or vocab in general. His word-bank is growing nicely.
Live and learn. :001_smile:
Peace,
Janice

There is SAT prep and then Reality (i.e. using lists from Spell Check).
Last week by son intended to write "aesthetically pleasing". He obviously had some problem with the spelling of the first word. From his Spell Check list he chose "ascetically" at which point I told him that this guru was not pleased. With a smirk on my face.
Anyway he is a "graduate" of Vocab from Classical Roots which we liked.

is this a program you would use to prepare for SAT? I think I read somewhere on this board that it is more interesting than VFCR and keep reviewing words on a conistent basis?
I would love to hear if anyone has used this. I am thinking of using it for a 7th grader.

We are quickly going through both books of Caesar's English this year. I was able to see Word Within the Word at a curricula night. It looks awesome!
My ds has studied Latin for a long time, but doing Caesar's English has really helped him look at words in a structural way.

Anyone try this? IT's been around for decades and has very good reviews on Amazon:

I like good old fashioned, tried and true stuff, myself. :)

We're using Worldly Wise. Ours is an older version which doesn't have the definitions in the book, so it takes time to look them up. The newer ones - Worldly Wise 3000 - have the definitions in them. I like this program, but I have no idea how it compares to others.
I can't find my copy of TWTM anywhere - or else I'd be looking in there for recommendations too. It'll probably show up after we've made all our curriculum decisions ... LOL

OH MY GOSH!!!! I used Word Wealth in high school---LOVED IT!!! It is a great book. I don't know how much using the book helped with with my SAT scores as I love words and vocab anyways---but what a blast from the past seeing that book!! :tongue_smilie:
Another suggestion for vocab is the IEW program Advanced Spelling and Vocabulary---one of the levels is specifically for SAT/ACT.
