View Full Version : Does it *have* to be biology/chemistry/physics?

Science is a tough subject for artsy dd. We are doing earth/space science this year, with lots of hands-on stuff and creativity, and she is enjoying it. So...

Do we have to do the bio-chem-physics sequence -- do colleges care what science their humanities students have had, as long as they've done something with labs? She would be much more interested in things like astronomy and marine biology.

Thanks!

It depends on the college. Some do care and specifically require Biology and Chemistry. Others just require 2 or 3 years of lab science and say one must be life science and one physical science, so your choices would be fine. There is no general answer that applies to all colleges.

Can you check with colleges she might want to attend? Their websites should tell you.

We talked about this at our last high school planning meeting. As a rule, colleges want the "standard". But, if your dc already knows where she wants to go or what she wants to study, then I would contact that institution and ask them. One mom said her dc had 4 science credits: physical science, biology, environmental science, and chemistry. The college she chose had no problem with that.

Thank you! I should have thought of that -- checking with the college. But i didn't. Thanks. :001_smile:
