My 7 yo ds just found some vase at my daughters dance. It was on the side of the retention pond. It looks old. There are no markings on it, as far as a maker. There is what looks like a native lady carved into it, holding a jar, and wearing a wrap.
Does anyone know who I would take this to to identify if it is 'real' or just some piece of junk? And wouldn't you know..my son dropped it and broke part of it. The inside of it, (it was kind of like two layers inside and had soaked up water), the inside inside is like a greenish color--like new clay. Or who knows, it could just be plastic.
Hmmmm...any ideas.

If you have a museum or a college nearby, I'd contact the curator or a history/archaeology/anthropology professor, etc.

My 8 yo son once found an artifact in Turkey, and we took it to the museum for identification (it was a pot handle from the Bronze Age, about 5000 years old). Amazing! I'm sure you can get a professional to take a look!

That sounds fascinating! Do take it to a university and have it checked out.

We found an ax head in our yard while digging for landscaping last summer. We had the opportunity to attend a regional artifacts program a few weeks ago so I tucked the ax head in my purse to take along.

As we browsed the tables, we came upon a man with a large variety of iron ax heads so I asked if he could look at ours. We became mini-celebrities at that moment. Men from other tables were peeking over shoulders and pressing in to look at the ax head.

It's pre-Civil War used by settlers when they would have first entered our area of the state, around the time we achieved statehood. :) We had to tell a few of them that "No", we didn't want to sell it. ;)
