I had the willynilly toddler with me and we went to Goodwill to kill some time while dd was in sewing class. Some old guy (yes, OLD!) approached me and said, "Is that your son or your GRANDSON?"

1) This child is unmistakably female and was wearing a floral outfit, floral socks and has flowers embroidered on her shoes.

2) [gritted teeth]I do not look like anyone's grandmother, thankyouverymuch![/gritted teeth]

On my way to get bifocals for the first time...I passed through Penny's and purchased a cute "grandma" shirt to give my mom. My 12 yr old dd and 9 mo old ds were with me. The clerk kept telling me how much I'd enjoy wearing the shirt...and I kept saying IT'S NOT FOR ME. I'm not sure who was more mortified--me or my dd who couldn't believe that anyone would think SHE was the mother!

I get the "you must be the grandma" thing all the time--doesn't help that I was almost 43 when ds was born! But it still stinks--and it's one of the reasons I regularly color my hair!!!!

Well, I had plucked my grays out just last night, so clearly, this man has vision issues. Serious ones.

Some of this, I believe, is a cultural gap.

An ignorant server at Subway asked me if my sons were my grandsons. Yes, I suppose at age 37 there is a biological possibility (If I had a child at age 15, who then had a child at age 15) I could be my 7 yo son's grandmother. Perhaps in her family 15 is considered a usual age for the first child.

It still ticked me off, though!

I get the "grandma" thing, too. Even when dd was an infant, and was still nursing, for pete's sake ... she had just finished up nursing, I'd gotten myself put back together (so to speak), and then someone asked, "Oh, is that your grandchild?" Umm, I guess maybe I shouldn't have been so discrete? Or maybe the person asking was from a culture where grandmas breastfeed their granchildren?

I've been mistaken for my kid's grandma before too, and I was only 36 at the time. And to top it off, I was pregnant. I've had better moments.

Doesn't help. I get GM all the time, and I have flaming strawberry blonde hair. Hubby, who is grey and rather older, doesn't get the GF thing.

My sister and I love to have people think we are mother and child. In chorus we chime "We're sisters ....pause while the person looks horrified....but we COULD be mother and daughter". And with that 20 year difference, we could be!

I was relating this incident to a few people at church and the one sitting the furthest away said, "Well, your son IS 20. You COULD be a grandmother." To which I replied, with my eyes narrowed and teeth clenched, "Biologically, perhaps, but THE POINT IS, DOUG, I do not LOOK like anyone's grandmother!" Then another man helpfully piped up with, "My wife's cousin was a grandmother at 34!" The man sitting closest to me also made some snarky man-comment which, interestingly, I can't even remember, but I do know I thumped his knee for it (thumped it very appropriately and with total Christian love). He jumped back and laughed.

I guess it didn't help that all 3 of these men are at least 8 years older than I. Note to self: Pick a sympathetic audience when expressing how insulted you are at being called old. :glare:
