I have what started as a sinus infection in mid-November and then it escalated to an upper respiratory infection in mid-December. I am on my third round of antibiotics and have missed the equivalent of about two weeks of work. I am still very congested and start coughing as soon as I lay down. It is getting very annoying.

Try seeing a different doctor. My son had issues like this, was hospitalized, he kept having issues, I finally took him to an allergist. He tested negative for allergies (at the time, he has a few now but they are mild even now) but the allergist put him on an anti-inflammatory nasal spray and some meds he takes through a nebulizer. The allergist said about half of his patients don't have allergies, they have untreated sinus problems. My son has what is called reactive sinus disease which is sort of like having asthma in your sinuses. That problem triggers asthma. He reacts to things like he has allergies but he doesn't. It's common for cold weather to compound the problem.

I realize this might not be your problem but if antibiotics aren't clearing you up, it's worth investigating.

Have they cultured your sinuses to make sure the antibiotic is the RIGHT one?

Then I would also look at www.nasopure.com. The saline washes are VERY effective and helpful. It is amazing (or gross) how much "stuff" comes out with this.

We do the saline washes and supremadophillus from www.houstonni.com and my 12dd has been free of sinus infections---and she used to have chronic severe infections.

i have chronic sinus/chest infections. one is brewing now ;-)

once I got the Dr to prescribe an inhaler I can keep them at bay much easier. I don't have the congestion when laying down!!! I don't have refills on one of the inhalers, but the other one I did. I use it when I feel that congestion starting up again when my sinus' are feeling full and sure enough in a few days I am much better. HTH

When I lived in CO, I had chronic sinus infections. One time I had a case like yours. I was on my 3rd round of antibiotics and it still wasn't taking care of the infection. That third antibiotic wiped me out, though. I had to be hospitalized for severe diarhhea. Turns out I was allergic to it (sulfa).

I've since moved to WA and have not had a sinus infection in over 6 years. A doctor once told me that wasn't uncommon. Some people could have allergies to something in one state and it develops into a sinus infection. Whatever grew in CO that doesn't grow here in WA is what was making me so sick. I'm contemplating a move back to CO, but that sinus infection business is making me hesitate. It's so nice not having those nasty things.

I agree with the poster who suggested seeing an allergist. Maybe it's a weed you're allergic to. Or maybe those pesky cottonwoods? Hope you find relief soon.

Have suffered with these for years but my only solution that actually works is massive doses of Vit C thee times a day until I can't tolerate it anymore. For me, that is 5-7000 mg BUT this isn't a suggestion for everyone. I had gotten to the point where antibiotics just didn't work anymore and my immune system needed help. Have heard of others who had acupuncture help. Maybe it's time to try the alternative medicine route?

If they're related to allergies, the best prevention is nasal steroid sprays daily. My dd had this problem for yrs: rotating pneumonia and sinus infections. She wouldn't do the nasal spray so we put her on Singulair and she hasn't had one since (that is huge for us, since she used to have 5-6/yr).
