I'm trying to find a geometry course for next year. Anyone used this?
Thanks.

Well we're using, but only for about 3 weeks, so I'm not sure how much help I could give you. Did you have specific questions? It's a fairly new program so I'm not sure how much "review" you will get.
It's set up like the other Saxon Maths; incremental, taught to the student, tests after every 5 lessons, etc... There is a Saxon Teacher DVD available for it, but if it's like the 6/5 it's basically verbatum of whats in the book. I like that they have real life application questions in each lesson.
I'm not a math person, so I can't tell you if it's better than one text over another as far as content is concerned, but it's a Saxon product, so if you think Saxon is a good program, I don't think you'll be dissapointed.
We chose it because it was the only Geometry text (other than McDougall Littel-which dd HATED) that was available to us when dd came home from school last month. But it's worked out well so far and dd likes it.
Not much help I'm sure, but if you have any other questions, I'll try to answer them for you.

My dd is using it and is in about the same place as Luna's dd above. Lesson 12.. . . We're using it with the D.I.V.E. CD's and it's been going very well - at least my dd (who hates all math) is not complaining about it. We had been using MUS but I wasn't very impressed with the Geometry program when my son did it last year so we wanted something different.
I've appreciated the real life applications also - many of the questions really make you think hard about how to apply what you know.

Looks like a lot of us started it around the same time! My son is on lesson 14 today. We also got the DIVE cds and so far, he's doing very well. I've been impressed with the questions so far. They are really making him think!

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to a convention soon, so I'll take a look at it.
Thanks again.

I have not used this but it got a favorable review from the Math tutor at our local enrichment center. It was decided to stay with another curriculum because of the cost of the textbook. She felt another text was just as good at about half the price.....
I do know that Saxon says they will have Saxon Teacher Discs to go along with it by this convention season...

you would use this? Since Saxon ties in a full Geometry course if you take Alg 1-Advanced Math?

DS15 is using Saxon Geometry. We are on lesson 80 (or there abouts). It's a good formal geometry course, but it's hard. Those proofs are not easy. We are past the proofs now, thank goodness! DS is working sin/cos/tan now and doing very well. It is set up incrementally just like all the other Saxon books. We have found a few errors - not surprising because this is the 1st edition.
Someone asked why you would use it - DS14 will be starting high school with his siblings next fall for 9th grade. They accept Geometry for 8th graders without any problem. but if he had done Saxon's Algebra 2 this year, he would have still been required to take a formal Geometry (even though it's built into alg 1/2/adv. math). You might also use it if you had used a different program for Algebra 1 (one that didn't include geometry).
It is my understanding that people just wantd a geometry course since that is the standard in this country. I know a while back, before Saxon really caught on, some people ran into problems with transcripts for college since there was no formal geometry course.

Also, I believe that formal proofs are not covered without doing a separate geometry course.

Hey all! Would you please share your experience now that you're done with the new Saxon Geometry? I'm very interested after reading a thread on the general board. Also, did you use the new or old Saxon Algebra I or II before or after the Geometry? How did that go?

Since you asked.... DS completed the Saxon Geometry last spring. He had used Saxon Alg 1 (3rd edition - the orange one) the year before. Geometry was a tough course. I thought the proofs would do us both in, but he made it through alive. DS did very well with the Saxon materials while being homeschooled and I had no issues with the integrated Geometry in the Alg 1 & 2 books, but since we knew DS was transferring to publi school this year, it made sense to use the stand-alone Geometry. He was in public school this year and took Algebra 2 and did very well and will be moving on to pre-calc in the fall.

Ugh. I posted this over a year ago. :001_huh: I was wrong. Formal proofs are covered in the Algebra 1/Algebra 2/Adv. Math sequence. There are fewer of them than in a separate formal geometry course, but there's ample for most students. One who really loves geometry or wants to delve deeper might choose to do an additional formal geometry course. Just wanted to correct this old post. :)
